Modern business woman with vr glasses for innovati 2022 01 19 00 09 47 utc“The old systems are being challenged. They're being proven to not be worthy anymore. They're not working….It's overwhelming…It's a moment of transition. And, when things start to break down, that's when new things start emerging.” That’s the observation of Justin Winters, Executive Director and Cofounder of One Earth, and former Executive Director of Leonardo DiCaprio’s foundation. “I think in this moment of breakdown, we should not let go of the fact that that is the opportunity for new systems, new economic models, new governance models to emerge,” she added, and “there's the potential of creating systems that are much more in alignment with supporting a healthy planet and healthy people.”

Question mark 2021 08 26 22 30 01 utc2022 has been wild. When I think back to this time last year, it feels like a lifetime and a whole business cycle has gone by. In December of 2021, the economy was roaring, investments were soaring, and 2022 revenue forecasts were ambitious.

But as this year ends, like many of you, I am taking stock of a year ending very differently than it started. And because I run a startup company, I am thinking about year-end revenue. But I'm also thinking about how I measure success at the end of a very turbulent year and what it means to build a company for long-term growth and sustainability.

Duke researchers have developed a gel-based cartilage substitute to relieve achy knees that’s even stronger and more durable than the real thing. Clinical trials to start next year. (CREDIT: Creative Commons)Over-the-counter pain relievers, physical therapy, steroid injections -- some people have tried it all and are still dealing with knee pain.

Often knee pain comes from the progressive wear and tear of cartilage known as osteoarthritis, which affects nearly one in six adults -- 867 million people -- worldwide. For those who want to avoid replacing the entire knee joint, there may soon be another option that could help patients get back on their feet fast, pain-free, and stay that way.

OCR L OCEANENERGY 1224 04If you’ve ever gone surfing or felt seasick or simply watched as the ocean crashed onto shore, you know the power that waves hold. The potentially world-changing question is, can that power be harnessed in a cost-effective way to produce clean, reliable electricity?

Solar and wind dominate discussions about renewable energy. And with only so much land available for such projects, interest in using open seas for floating solar and offshore wind farms is growing. That was on display earlier this month, when the federal government held the first auction for wind farms off the coast of California.
