Deals to AI startups reached a record high last year, from 160 deals in 2012 to 658 in 2016. Although non-US deal share has been increasing over the time period, well over a majority of deals, around 70%, went to startups in the US in the last 5 years.

The top 3 states for deals were California (51%), New York (11%), and Massachusetts (9%).

Your answer to that question is a key predictor of your health and livelihood, according to a new report from Gallup and Healthways that ranks states by well-being. "People who go to the dentist are generally better at evaluating their lives and in control of their health, while poor oral health is linked to many serious physical issues downstream," said lead Gallup researcher Dan Witters.

Now you can ride the Hyperloop in virtual reality

What started as Elon Musk's wild dream of a sort-of-Jetsons-style tube for high speed commuting is becoming a reality in at least one country. Now SpaceX posted a 360-degree video of its own Hyperloop demonstration pod and tube being tested on a short track. 

The video was shot during the recent Hyperloop Pod Competition launched to showcase viable designs for Hyperloop systems. The virtual reality device-friendly video gives us our closest look yet at what it might really be like to ride in a Hyperloop pod.

Amazon, the Seattle-based tech giant, has been growing at a blistering pace over the past five years — and a new analysis by GeekWire reveals where the company’s latest growth has been taking place.

Among our findings: Amazon saw significant growth in 2016 not just at its headquarters in Seattle, but also in many Midwest and Southern states, as the tech giant fills in its distribution footprint. In one state in particular, Ohio, the company has grown from a handful of employees to thousands in just a year.

The product innovations that generate the most excitement and public interest are the disruptive innovations. They could be a new way to call a cab, drive a car with little need for gas, or a completely new way to look at medical science, technology, or entertainment.

However, these innovations aren’t that common. The most successful, innovative companies strike a balance between core, adjacent, and transformational initiatives. A 2012 study found that companies that allocated about 70% of their innovation activity to core initiatives, 20% to adjacent ones, and 10% to transformational ones outperformed their peers.

Eight states lost population between 2015 and 2016, and 12 others recorded their lowest population increase of the decade, as economic woes and lower birth rates hit some states harder than others.

Connecticut, Illinois, Mississippi, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming lost population. The last time so many states registered a drop in population was from 1986 to 1987, when oil prices collapsed. Twelve Western and Southern states, along with the District of Columbia, lost population then.

In front of a standing-room-only crowd in the Singh Center’s Glandt Forum this week, four teams made their pitches for how to turn technology developed by Penn Engineers into the next big thing.

Each year, Engineering, Wharton’s Mack Institute for Innovation Management, Wharton Entrepreneurship and the Penn Center for Innovation come together for an invention competition known as the Y-Prize. Unlike the XPRIZE, where competitors come up with novel technologies to solve a particular problem, the Y-Prize starts with the technologies and challenges entrants to find commercial applications that they are particularly suited for.

Mauritius Lost Continent Found Under Island Time com

You'd think it would be hard to misplace an entire continent, what with the mountains and trees and all that other hard-to-miss stuff. Now, however, it seems that one of Earth's continents indeed went missing. The good news is, it's at last been found, lying below the waters of the Indian Ocean, beneath the tiny, 790 sq. mi. (2,040 sq. km) island of Mauritius.

To "protect the American people from terrorist attacks by foreign nationals admitted to the United States," President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order that freezes travel for 90 days for citizens from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, and Yemen. Additionally, the US Refugee Admissions Program was suspended for 120 days, and Syrian refugees have been indefinitely suspended from entry into the US. The order originally applied to all non-US residents from these countries, although the Trump administration later eased the restriction on green card holders.
