At BIF, we have come to understand the conditions that enable institutions to explore and test new business models. We also understand why leaders fail at it.

Over the last few years, I had the pleasure and honor of partnering with the leadership at Children’s Health, a pediatric health care system in Dallas Texas, to successfully navigate this journey.

The newest and most dangerous island in the world is about to get a robotic sentinel. Since bursting to life 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo in 2013, a massive marine volcano called Nishinoshima has erupted dozens of times, spewing red-hot lava that engulfed a neighboring island. As the volcano has grown, so has the risk it represents to 2,500 people living on the nearby Japanese archipelago of Ogasawara.

If ever there was a Valley cliché overdue for retirement, it’s our cherished narrative around “disruption.” You know the story: Well funded Startup is attacking this or that Huge Market where Big Dumb Incumbent is failing to Innovate. Our hero the Startup, being far more nimble, efficient, and tech savvy, is Destined to Eat the Incumbent’s Lunch.

We recently looked at some of the issues around millennial engagement and retainment, and wondered if intrapreneurship is the answer to the millennial problem.

By investing in intrapreneurship programs and in an intrapreneurial culture, companies increase their chances of attracting and retaining the millennial talent they need to drive innovative change within their organizations.

But what’s the millennial perspective? We spoke with two millennial intrapreneurs, Tucker Matheson from PwC and Samantha Klein from IBM, to gather their thoughts on the topic.

Even though heat and sound are both forms of energy, when you were a kid, you probably didn’t need to be told not to speak in thermal convection. And each time your children come across a stray animal, they likely don’t have to self-consciously rehearse a subroutine of zoological attributes to decide whether it’s a cat or a dog. Human beings come pre-loaded with the cognitive gear to simply perceive these distinctions.

Ever since EQ published our ecosystem map as a printed infographic a couple of years ago, we have received great feedback. People have told us they hang it on their office walls for reference and print and share it in meetings or presentations. Seeing the response to our map and ITEN’s map, it’s not surprising to us that the Kauffman Foundation has said that mapping your startup ecosystem is a strategy to strengthen it.

A single job can serve as a watermark for an entire time period. Where would the Renaissance be without its artists? Or the Industrial Revolution without its coal miners? What says “World War II” better than Rosie the Riveter? Fifty years from now, when we think back to 2017, we probably won’t wax poetic about our president's Attorney General pick, or the musicians who were caught lip syncing on national TV. Instead, we’ll talk about the everyday people who worked to shape our future. And we'll have plenty to choose from.

Anyone attempting to lead change in an organization knows to expect some resistance. Change is not a rational process; no matter how positive the future you are creating, it’s natural for humans to struggle with it.

Such resistance is no less frustrating for being predictable. At times, it can seem that all that stands between you and your goals are a few naysayers and whiners. And to those on a mission, such reactions can seem like putting one’s head in the sand. “The old business is not coming back,” one CEO told me. “We have to innovate or we will die.”

Universities are increasingly aware of their ability to serve and develop the region from which it evolved. Partnerships between universities and regions now often take place on a joint strategic level. Taking this into account, indicators for demonstrating impact are becoming increasingly important for both universities and regional innovation policymakers. The mission of the AESIS Network is to develop international standards for measuring impact, whilst keeping in mind that all regions are different.

Abu Dhabi’s diversification strategy rests in part on laying the seeds of future industries overseas while preparing for their reception at home.

Economic diversification has long been a top priority for resource-based economies. From Canada to Australia, economic diversification away from natural resource dependency continues to occupy the minds of policymakers. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is no different in this regard. The country has various economic vision strategies and plans all aimed at changing the industrial and economic structures of the economy. However, in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, a new economic diversification policy experiment has been underway for some time now. Through a government investment arm called Mubadala, Abu Dhabi has pursued a diversification strategy that turns economic development models upside down.

Pig embryos that had been injected with human stem cells when they were only a few days old began to grow organs containing human cells, scientists reported on Thursday, an advance that promises — or threatens — to bring closer the routine production of creatures that are part human and part something else.

These human-pig “chimeras” were not allowed to develop past the fetal stage, but the experiment suggests such creations could eventually be used to grow fully human organs for transplant, easing the fatal shortage of organs: 120,000 people in the United States are waiting for lifesaving transplants, but every day two dozen die before they get them.
