Regardless of whether you start a business, work at a startup or work at an established company, entrepreneurship skills will differentiate you from your peers and help you land your first and subsequent jobs.

I was reminded of this on November 14 when I attended this year’s Startup Fest sponsored by the Charles D. Close School of Entrepreneurship of Drexel University, the nation’s first stand-alone school of entrepreneurship founded in 2013.

“There have always been reports of large corporations stealing inventions from small businesses, but it used to be possible via the courts to vindicate the patent rights of owners and obtain ultimate redress.  The AIA has turned into a weapon of deep-pocketed big businesses that enables them to steal with impunity inventions from small businesses and independent inventors.”

Once they reach critical mass, startups are often acquired by larger companies looking to leverage what the smaller business has to offer. Along with the products and services, the acquiring company also gets to hire the startup’s employees. It’s a quick way to boost built-in talent and institutional knowledge, but is it an effective strategy? Wharton management professor Daniel Kim examines that question in his research paper, “Predictable Exodus: Startup Acquisitions and Employee Departures.” Kim spoke to Knowledge@Wharton about his findings, which show that employees of acquired companies are more likely to leave. Ben Horowitz, the high-profile venture capitalist behind some of Silicon Valley’s fastest-growing startups, is out with an intriguing book, called What You Do Is Who You Are, that emphasizes the power of culture, rather than technology or money, as a driver of business success. One of his most intriguing insights is that powerful cultures are built around what he calls “shocking rules” — rituals and practices that are memorable, so “bizarre,” that people inside the organization “encounter almost daily” and that people who hear about them wonder why they are necessary.

One day soon an emerging technology highlighted in this report will allow you to virtually teleport to a distant site and actually feel the handshakes and hugs of fellow cyber travelers. Also close to becoming commonplace: humanoid (and animaloid) robots designed to socialize with people; a system for pinpointing the source of a food-poisoning outbreak in just seconds; minuscule lenses that will pave the way for diminutive cameras and other devices; strong, biodegradable plastics that can be fashioned from otherwise useless plant wastes; DNA-based data-storage systems that will reliably stow ginormous amounts of information; and more.

A researcher at the University of Arizona developed a carbon fiber fabric that will be inserted into fractured bones to help them heal. The fabric will be used as an alternative to plaster or fiberglass casts.

The inventor of the fabric is Hamid Saadatmanesh, professor of civil and architectural engineering and mechanics, described how the fabric is inserted.

Smartphones are an integral part of our lives and mobile apps are a crucial part of customer engagement and experience. In 2019, many different app technologies have surfaced. The year 2020 will mark the growth and development of these technologies. A recent report by market research firm techARC revealed that most Indians use up to 24 apps on their phones daily. Hence, it is important that young entrepreneurs, irrespective of the industry they work in, create a favorable experience for their customers.

This year, Yarina's company, Sisu Global, launched its first product designed to tackle the problem of chronic blood shortages for transfusions in certain parts of Africa. This device, called Hemafuse, can replace or augment donor blood in emergency situations. The company has won multiple awards for its work and has raised over $3.2 million in financial backing so far.

Five nations accounted for nearly half of all scientific activity around the world as well as the great majority of patents issued during the three years to 2017.

According to the latest World Intellectual Property Report, China, Germany, Japan, the Republic of Korea and the United States were the dominant countries.

Published by the World Intellectual Property Organization or WIPO, the World Intellectual Property Report is a biennial publication that examines the worldwide creation and flows of knowledge.

This year’s edition has a special focus on innovation networks and global ‘hotspots’, to build on themes that were identified in WIPO’s Global Innovation Index published earlier this year. (See also this recent analysis by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.)

The biotech space has witnessed radical transformations in the last 15 years, both globally and in India. Worth $50 Bn in 2018, the Indian biotech economy currently comprises of more than 600 core biotechnology companies and more than 2,600 biotech startups, accounting for a 3% share in the global biotechnology industry. To further unleash the potential of Indian biotech, Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), in partnership with Indian Angel Network (IAN), has announced the launch of BioAngels Network “BioAngels” (BiAN). IAN comprises close to 500 members across the world, including entrepreneurs and CEOs. With investors from 11 countries, IAN’s presence spans seven locations, including cities in India and the UK.

In wealthy countries such as Britain, the elite spend an extraordinary amount of time and money trying to get their children into the best universities. There is a generally accepted belief that a degree from one of the world’s finest higher education institutions represents a passport to a successful career and a life of accomplishment.

CEOs and founders of startup businesses face many challenges: raising startup capital, building a management team, developing competitive products, starting a marketing program, finding early customers, and more. The prospect of launching a new startup can be daunting.

In our line of work, we get to talk with hundreds of leaders around the globe, and from virtually every industry.

Most of them seem to intuitively understand the importance of innovation, but there’s still a lot of fluff, ambiguity and uncertainty regarding innovation as a topic. As a result, most leaders aren’t seeing the results they were expecting for from innovation.

Given that we’re now on the verge of the next golden age of innovation, leaders have every reason to be anxious about the future of their organization.

What we choose to eat can affect climate change, and that means all the factors involved in feeding our growing population—from agriculture to fair trade to food waste to the labor force—can have an impact on how sustainable our food system is. That’s a lot of information to track, but it’s important to have that big-picture perspective. And now we’re closer to it, thanks to a map created by the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) that rates food sustainability for different countries around the world.

As a mentor to many aspiring entrepreneurs, I challenge them to think beyond what I call linear extensions to a current trend, such as another “easier-to-use” app for smartphones, a new dating site for pets, or another niche social network. In my experience, these startups usually find the field crowded with competitors, making it hard to get any attention, and most drift into obscurity.

Sacramento politicians have heralded the state’s record-low 4.0 percent unemployment figures.  While this is good news, anyone living in Southern California will tell you that things aren’t as rosy as they appear to be.

Take what’s going on in Imperial County, for example.  Unemployment rates in the El Centro region, which borders both Mexico and Arizona, were 22.1 percent in August, which the California Center for Jobs and the Economy terms, “Great Depression-era levels of unemployment.”

The biggest mistake an entrepreneur can make when launching their own business starts with money, according to one billionaire.

Dallas Mavericks owner and tech tycoon Mark Cuban dished some career advice in a podcast interview with On Air With Ryan Seacrest, where the Shark Tank star told Seacrest that the “biggest mistake” new business owners can make is thinking they have to raise money.

Is American innovation sputtering? The data suggests so: productivity growth in the US, which is powered by innovation, has been decelerating. Total factor productivity grew substantially in the middle of the 20th century, but started slowing in 1970.…

Data from the National Science Foundation indicate that US investment in science has steadily increased between 1970 and 2010, as measured by dollars spent (up 5X), number of PhDs trained (2X) and articles published (7X). Why is there little productivity growth? Probably today’s science is simply not as groundbreaking as before.
