Starting a full-time business is tough enough, and the conditions are even tougher for those of us who want to start a business on side. I knew being a "side-hustle" entrepreneur would be difficult for me; juggling responsibilities of a family, a day job and a side-business is no walk in the park for anyone.

Rather than focusing on what I was doing wrong, I decided to focus on what I could do right. I decided to research what successful people do and compare my findings with my efforts. The solution I found shocked me with its simplicity: Successful entrepreneurs have crazy-productive habits.

“I want people to tell me I will fail. I need to know who I am battling against. If I don’t have someone that I want to go after, then how am I going to win?”

This is a peek inside the mind of successful entrepreneur Jeremy Andrus, longtime President/CEO of Skullcandy, and now Traeger Grills.

Iconic cities are not born, they are made. It was never a sure thing that New York would become more influential than Philadelphia or that San Francisco would birth more startups than anywhere in the world. Rather, the cities that become great at something do so because of very deliberate action taken by residents and governments. While San Francisco is hard to beat at its startup prowess, cities all over the country are rushing to become the next 'hub' for something. Cleveland is aspiring to become the bioscience capital of the world, the northwest wants to rule on green energy, and Boston wants to rock it on med tech.

In March 2015, the China-led International University Innovation Alliance Start-up Competition UK held its inaugural session in London, with UK startups pitching innovations specifically to Chinese investors. Sun Wansong, Deputy Director of China’s Investment Promotion Agency of Ministry of Commerce, explained in his opening speech that China is proactively turning itself from the “world’s factory” into a creator of innovation-driven ideas. Even though China still accounts for making about 80% of the world’s air conditioners, 70% of mobile phones, and 60% of shoes, the country has been gradually shifting away from the role of manufacturing nation. This is perhaps not surprising since labour cost has been rising continuously in China and companies are reallocating their production facilities to neighbouring Indonesia and Vietnam, whose labour wages are only about 31% and 24%, respectively, of that of China. While other Asian countries are busy competing for China’s manufacturing businesses, China has set itself on the path to engage higher value activities that offer better profit margin, including deploying robotics to increase efficiency and reduce dependency on cheap labor.

On October 8, 2011, I said goodbye to my loved ones and didn’t know if I would ever see them again. 15 hours later I was in the ICU having become the 11th person in the United Kingdom to undergo an intestinal transplant at The Churchill Hospital, Oxford.

As part of transplant I had an ileostomy. This is where part of the intestine is brought to the outside of your body and your bodily waste is collected in a pouch known as an ostomy pouch. You lose control of the very thing you take for granted. On top of that, everyone wants access to output data and the only way of doing this is manually emptying into a jug. There had to be an alternative.

A new experimental revelation about black phosphorus nanoribbons should facilitate the future application of this highly promising material to electronic, optoelectronic and thermoelectric devices. A team of researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) has experimentally confirmed strong in-plane anisotropy in thermal conductivity, up to a factor of two, along the zigzag and armchair directions of single-crystal black phosphorous nanoribbons.

A lot has been written about the changing face of the modern internship, but plenty of it still misses the mark: Network aggressively. Learn as much as you can about as many things as possible. Don't spill the coffee. It may not be bad advice, but because it's so general, it's hard to put into practice in ways that actually pay off when you're hunting for your first entry-level job.

A World Bank report released earlier this year featured a jarring statistic: 200 million people moved to East Asia’s cities between 2000 and 2010. That figure is greater than the populations of all but five of the world’s countries. Commentators argue that the urbanization of Asia is inevitable, with one calling recent growth “just the beginning.” Considered alongside figures about urban migration, the fact that only 1 percent of Asia’s land is urbanized (a popular statistic) appears to validate predictions about the increasing densification of cities. However, growth in the capacity of cities to accommodate industrial growth seems to be flattening. With a rising middle class and booming demand for automobiles, Asian cities can expect no relief from congestion, and this may be a deterrent for businesses. Rural areas are increasingly prepared to absorb this potential shift in demand.

Data storytelling has become a powerful part of the communications toolkit, allowing both journalists and marketers to communicate key messages by using data and data visualization to drive articles, blog posts, and reports. But the power of data storytelling isn’t limited to written communication: you can also use data to deliver presentations that are both more credible and more visually compelling.

As Juan Manuel Fangio exited the chicane before the blind Tabac corner in the 1950 Monaco Grand Prix, he stomped on the brake. It was a counterintuitive reaction for a racing driver exiting a corner — but one that likely saved his life. By slowing down he avoided plowing into a multi-car pile-up, which was just out of sight beyond the turn. In racing folklore, Fangio’s evasive action is considered a miracle. But why did he slow down?

I was in your shoes once, looking at venture capital from the outside in and trying to understand what it would take to get a foot in the door. It was a daunting process, and with no set career path in the industry, I defaulted to hustle, reaching out to as many VCs as I could to learn about their paths into the business. Of all the advice I was given in the dozens of meetings, coffees, and quick chats I had, there was a single common thread: get an MBA.

IChristopher Mimsn Silicon Valley, a place where the college-dropout startup founder—think Bill Gates, Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg—is lionized, it is hard to stand out on account of precociousness or youth. But as she takes me on a tour of Binary Capital, the venture-capital firm where she is an analyst and an associate, Tiffany Zhong manages to.

Something wonderful happened in the startup community leading up to this election. We’ve been shaken into action as the parties have failed to deliver clear positions on how they will support the technology sector in Canada.

It started with concerns over the New Democratic position on stock options, an important incentive that attracts and retains talent in the early stages of startups. This led NDP Leader Tom Mulcair to clarify his position on stock options in an effort to ease tensions in the tech community. It continued with Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau pledging $900-million to support innovation, to mixed response. This scramble by the candidates to address tech and innovation policy has motivated the industry like never before.

Losing your job isn’t something anyone wants, but the experience can make a person a better leader. Steve Jobs, Carly Fiorina, Mark Cuban, and Anna Wintour were all fired during their careers, for example, and each came back stronger.

Imergy Power Systems CEO Bill Watkins was just 21 when he was fired the first time. Working in the psychiatric ward of a Texas hospital during the early ‘70s, the head nurse told him to cut his hair; the hospital had a policy that male employees’ hair couldn’t be longer than the top of their ears. Watkins refused.

If you think you are the perfect fit for the entrepreneur lifestyle, but you’re not yet sure if you’re ready to start your own, then I recommend that you take a job with an existing startup first to validate the culture realities against your dream. Without risking all your life savings, you may find that corporate desk you have as an alternative is a lot more satisfying.

Running or working for a startup is more of a lifestyle than a career choice. Be prepared for chaos, long hours, and small paychecks in the short-term. Founders stock, and stock options, will be worth nothing for the first several years, if not forever. The fun is the long-term potential of changing the world, and maybe even hitting it big financially.

san francisco

When new companies start to gain traction—especially tech companies—it's hard for their founders not to ponder relocating to San Francisco. Digital communication tools have shrunk the world considerably, but physical location still matters.

I, for one, have certainly entertained the idea of taking my Sydney-based startup to the Bay Area over the past few years, and I know there would be some serious upsides to doing so. San Francisco has more resources, more like-minded people, more tech talent on the hunt for a new challenge, more capital, and quite frankly, more prestige than cities like Sydney—whose tech ecosystem is so much smaller.

Even if you could do it accurately—and you really can’t—counting calories is unhelpful for weight loss and disease prevention.

Once the foundation of popular diet programs and nutrition guidelines, calorie counting has fallen out of favor with food experts. From a basic accounting standpoint, “calorie counting simply can’t be done accurately,” says Dr. Marion Nestle, a professor of food and nutrition at New York University and author of Why Calories Count.
