Disruption looks a little different when you’re talking about some of the world’s most complex problems, such as the refugee crisis and fighting chronic diseases.

That’s why in 2015 MIT launched Solve, an organization that “crowdsources” solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems.

Solve works with experts and stakeholders to determine specific challenges in need of scalable solutions (think inclusive innovation, refugee education and brain health). Entrepreneurs from anywhere in the world and at any stage of development can submit their tech-based solution to these challenges. A panel of judges selects finalists from these applicants, who then pitch at a live event hosted by MIT. The winners of this pitch competition—called “Solvers”—then have access to MIT’s range of resources and experts to scale their ideas.

Daydreaming during meetings or class might actually be a sign that you’re smart and creative, according to a Georgia Institute of Technology study.

“People with efficient brains may have too much brain capacity to stop their minds from wandering,” said Eric Schumacher, an associate psychology professor who co-authored a research paper published in the journal Neuropsychologia.

Participants were instructed to focus on a stationary fixation point for five minutes in an MRI machine. Functional MRI (fMRI), which measures changes in brain oxygen levels as a proxy for neural activity, was used.

Manipulating mitochondrial networks inside cells — either by dietary restriction or by genetic manipulation that mimics it — may increase lifespan and promote health, according to new research from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

The study, published Oct. 26 online in Cell Metabolism, sheds light on the basic biology involved in cells’ declining ability to process energy over time, which leads to aging and age-related disease, and how interventions such as periods of fasting might promote healthy aging.

Here’s a question every leader should answer: Do you have a clear understanding of your people’s skills, and where the gaps are?

Odds are, the answer is no. Although the cloud, digitization, and the Internet of Things allow businesses to gather and analyze all sorts of data, few organizations today have a system in place to track the skills they have. And even fewer apply that knowledge to gauge what skills they lack, both now and in the future — which presents a challenge, given that in tomorrow’s automation- and data-driven workplace, talent will be scarce and the needs of your organization will change often.

creativity

If you google the phrase definitions of creativity, guess how many definitions show up? 135 million! That's right, 135 million. And so, if you are looking for THE definition, give up now. You won't find it. It doesn't exist. It's official. I'm an Irish citizen.

I've lived in the US my entire life, and I haven't left for some time. But Ireland's nationality laws are based on "jus sanguinis," or "right of blood" in Latin. And unlike those in many countries, Ireland's rules apply not only to the children of Irish citizens who were born in Ireland, but also to their grandchildren.

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Tyler and Alissa Hodge, two of the hundreds of young professionals who have moved here in recent years, noticed that despite the influx there was not a single city-style coffee shop downtown.

Whitney Johnson authored an article in Harvard Business Review titled, “Why Today’s Teens Are More Entrepreneurial than Their Parents.” In this piece, Johnson states that Generation Z’s teenagers no longer work in customary first jobs. She claims over 70% of teenagers have roles that can be described as self-employed, while only 12% hold down traditional positions. The young people of Generation Z are less likely to be found flipping burgers, working in retail or waiting tables.

A year ago, we were shaken by geopolitical shifts with unpredictable ripple effects. The situation looks no more stable today.
