Venture capital funding in India has bounced back after a slowdown last year. Top venture capitalists said that now there is focus on leaders that are emerging in each sector and on companies that are capital efficient.

Among India-headquartered tech companies, there were nine fewer instances of funding compared with Q4 ’16, but total capital invested in the quarter jumped 550%, according to the ‘Asia Tech Investment Report’ by CB Insights, a data intelligence platform.

Accelerating growth is on every CEO’s agenda. Each year business leaders commit to an overall revenue growth target, but the reality is that growth within a business is often very uneven. Some parts grow faster, and one hopes that they offset the other parts that may be declining. Dave Calhoun, former vice chair at General Electric and now senior managing director at Blackstone, says that it’s better to double down on your winners than to invest in fixing the losers. But many companies have a one-size-fits-all mindset toward metrics, which makes it hard to use that judgment when allocating resources from the top.

How do you get a job these days? The answer often involves networking — it isn’t what you know, it’s whom, we’re told. But what does that mean? After all, we’re connected to many people, in countless ways. So who can actually help? What kinds of relationships should we try to use when we are looking for a job?

Tkidhis past month — and for the fourth year in a row — I visited California's San Mateo County Event Center for the granddaddy of Maker Faire events, a celebration of home-baked technology projects and DIY attitudes. Over 125,000 people visited the Maker Faire to check out all kinds of creations, share ideas and get inspired to build something themselves.

With the Identity Theft Resource Center® reporting a 40 percent increase in data breaches in 2016, there seems to be a growing population out there worried about all the people intent on hurting them. Why is everyone so paranoid these days? My plea to entrepreneurs is to recognize these concerns as an opportunity, to make people’s life better, rather than stoke the fires.

The intelligence community is betting on cloud-based application delivery.

Earlier this month, In-Q-Tel, the venture capital firm for the 17 agencies that comprise the IC, joined Bain Capital Ventures and Microsoft Ventures in making a $16 million investment in San Mateo-based Frame.

Frame, which recently opened an office in Reston, Virginia, because of its growing federal business, is among a new crop of companies looking to challenge leading traditional virtual desktop infrastructure providers like Citrix and VMware.

If you’re an entrepreneur, chances are a garden-variety office worker has looked you in the eye at some point and asked: “Are you crazy?”

No matter what sector you enter into, starting a new venture involves tonnes of risk and little sleep. Trading up a regular salary for the promise of bigger returns down the line can be terrifying, so are some people more cut out for the game than others?

Fcollegeor many of us, college is about making mistakes -- changing majors, all-nighters, failed relationships, unfulfilling part-time jobs, a few (thousand) beers, maybe a misdemeanor or two. What college wasn’t about for me was an education in entrepreneurship, even though it was my major.

Crowdfunding can be incredibly thrilling, right?

You’ve been dreaming about something for months, maybe even years, and now you finally have a chance to bring it fruition. And so you carefully put together your Kickstarter campaign, estimating how much it will cost and when you’ll be able to ship it.

Hold on. Don’t take it live yet. There is something you need to know.

Air pollution is a significant problem in many parts of the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) 6.5 million deaths per year can be attributed to air pollution, much greater than the number who die from HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and road injuries combined.

A number of enduring serious health conditions can also be attributed to poor air quality including respiratory conditions, lung cancer, heart disease, and even damage to the brain, nerves, liver, or kidneys.

One of the top skills businesses are requiring these days from prospective employees is the ability to think “innovatively”. What many organizations are getting wrong, however, is the true meaning behind innovation. Innovation is not just some buzzword you should be putting up on job postings or the company mission statement. Innovation is for real – and it’s not just something the R&D department does while designing new products.

A crappy cup of airplane tea and the rise of Donald Trump led to the launch in May of an outfit with the wacky name of All Turtles, which might usher in a new way to think about tech startups around the world.

The All Turtles story began with Phil Libin, who used to be CEO of the app company Evernote and lately has worked as a partner at the venture capital firm General Catalyst in Silicon Valley. Last fall, Libin boarded a JetBlue flight from Boston to San Francisco. As the plane leveled off, he ordered tea.

To discover what's different about the startup community in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Startup Edmonton's CEO, Tiffany Linke-Boyko suggests we start on the ground floor of the Mercer Warehouse. In "Vacancy Hall" (as the ground floor pop-up retail space is known) entrepreneurs can rent space month-to-month as a way to test or introduce new products or meet customers. Online lifestyle company, The Skinny moved into Vacancy Hall primarily as a way for their existing customers to pick-up orders offline. During the Vacancy Hall tenancy, The Skinny's founder saw a larger need for her customers to come together and see her more often, so this spring, she left Vacancy Hall and scaled her offline presence into a larger, permanent retail storefront in a local mall.

The tech industry is one of the most powerful entities affecting our world. But who are these people? And what do they NewImagebelieve and how do they think about the world? A couple of recent articles provide a window into this.

Rationalist Demographics The first is a set of demographics from the reader survey (unscientific, but with 5500 respondents) of the popular blog Slate Star Codex. SSC is the web site of Scott Alexander, pen name of a Midwest psychiatrist. It’s explicitly associated with the Rationalist movement and especially the Less Wrong community. If you’d like to get a feel for the Rationalist way of life, see the New York Times Magazine profile of them. One site says of them:

The Department of Homeland Security announced on Tuesday that it would not be implementing a ban on laptops and other electronic devices on flights to the United States from Europe.

Whether the U.S. government will pursue a rule like this in the future remains uncertain, and there are reports that European and United States officials differ on whether a ban or similar regulation should be instituted at some point in the future, with the Trump Administration reportedly still considering it.

Every business professional needs to stay cool under pressure, to be a top performer, and for the sake of their own health. Yet everyone has a melting point – a critical threshold where pressure causes them to respond irrationally. Many people believe their threshold is permanently set by family genetics, or cultural influences, but I believe anyone can train themselves to stay cool.

Extreme heat, it turns out, is very bad for the economy. Crops fail. People work less, and are less productive when they do work.

That’s why an increase in extremely hot days is one of the more worrisome prospects of climate change. To predict just how various countries might suffer or benefit, a team of scientists at Stanford and the University of California, Berkeley, have turned to historical records of how temperature affects key aspects of the economy. When they use this data to estimate how various countries will fare with a warming planet, the news isn’t good.
