The fourth annual ranking profiles the most innovative private companies in the world that are shaking up industries and causing major paradigm shifts that affect every corner of society (see methodology here). This year 28 of the total are Silicon Valley upstarts. The rest are from other U.S. cities, and five are found abroad.
