Somewhere in a gray photo box in a closet in my parents’ house, there is a photo of Anna Gerhold. Old-fashioned portraits capture so much character and context. She and each of her four sisters wear billowy dresses with cinched waists: a row of advanced, middle-class ladies of the 1890s.
