Workplace Team Business Meeting Business People

All three generations share an increasing enthusiasm for entrepreneurship, but differ globally in their fears about the future of work.

Members of “Generation Y” or the “millennial generation” as they’re commonly known, have forced a great deal of change in the workplace. A sizable body of research has tried to understand this incredibly visible and demanding generation, born between the early 1980s and mid-1990s. With unprecedented access to technology, millennials have changed the game for leaders, redefining how they expect them to behave and to give them the opportunities they feel they deserve.

President Donald Trump

President Donald Trump’s hiring freeze will last only as long as it takes his administration to come up with an alternative attrition plan, according to a memorandum released by the White House Monday, and could provide broad exemptions for agency leaders.

Trump said his hiring moratorium would “be applied across the board in the executive branch” and apply to any positions vacant as of Jan. 22. It would bar agencies from creating new positions. Agency heads can exempt positions they deem “necessary to meet national security or public safety responsibilities.”

Spurred by an innocent query recently posed to a biologist on Twitter, scientists are assembling an unusual database of animal life to answer the burning question, "Does it fart?"

The online open-access spreadsheet of smells began as the Twitter hashtag #DoesItFart, and gathers examples submitted by dozens of researchers confirming or denying the gassy output of a wide range of animals, from African wild dogs ("Any self-respecting canine does") to wood lice ("Excrete ammonia").

Over the last two decades, the globe has seen a steady rise in the number of doctoral graduates. According to an OECD report, the United States is the largest PhD producer of any country worldwide by far, churning out 67,449 graduates in 2014. That's well over twice as many as second-placed Germany's 28,147. The United Kingdom rounds off the top-three with 25,020 PhDs.

In recent years, large emerging economies substantially expanded their higher educational training capacities so it comes as little surprise to see India in fourth place with 24,300 doctoral graduates. Science is hugely popular with PhD candidates across the OECD region with 40 percent of all new doctorates graduating in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The keyword “Industry 4.0” is no longer an empty cliché or a black box; it is currently probably the most important topic within the German economy. Not only will existing processes be revolutionized – but also new businesses and business models will arise. More and more companies have already started to tap into its potential. At the heart of Industry 4.0 is the emerging Internet of Things (IoT). What will the IoT mean for the chemical industry? A chemical company is naturally process oriented, with excellence in managing ultra-complex processes, and very strong in product and processes innovation in existing business models. But it may be less well prepared for a fast changing business environment and the emergence of new business models.

Performance reviews can be tough for anyone. But men take their annual evaluations particularly hard, a new study found.

Beware of letting acquisitions take priority over organic growth.

It’s not surprising that many executives think about growth primarily in terms of acquisitions. For some, opportunities to grow organically are limited, especially in maturing or contracting product markets. Others are drawn to the allure of high-profile deal making, with its virtually instant boost to revenues and often earnings per share as well.

For the past few years, President Barack Obama’s White House has attracted a slew of private-sector technology heavyweights, often poached from a recurring cast of Silicon Valley stalwarts such as Twitter and Google.

One of the largest icebergs ever seen is even closer to breaking off Antarctica

Just 6.4 miles of ice are holding an iceberg the size of Delaware onto the floating Larsen C Ice Shelf in Antarctica, and scientists warn it could cleave off the ice-bound continent at any time.
