Global markets rose earlier this week when the polls edged toward remaining. But the voters’ choice to leave has severely undermined the confidence of investors.

With the Columbus Dispatch (and many possible runner-up cities) reporting two days ago that Columbus was the winner of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Smart City Challenge, official word was silent until this afternoon.

Today in Columbus, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx officially recognized and announced — to a full house at the Douglas Community Center in the neighborhood of Linden — that the city is indeed the winner and will reap the benefits of victory; a $40 million grant from the DOT, $10 from Paul Allen’s Vulcan Inc., plus $90 million in local matching contributions.

At night, just after the full moon, teams of scientists dive beneath the waves to study one of the planet’s most prolific and mysterious rites of reproduction.

It’s coral behaving badly — or very nicely, depending on your point of view. Warm ocean waters suddenly teem with trillions of eggs and sperm that swirl in the currents and merge to form new life, a profligate frenzy that can leave the ocean’s surface awash in pink flotsam.

mobile devices

It is no secret that the use of mobile technology is growing, from phones to tablets the market has seen an almost unprecedented growth in the past three years. With Millennials taking over the workforce and Generation Z not far behind, we would be fools not to realize this trend will continue. So why then are so many companies resisting moving toward mobile-friendly websites? It is understandable that the investment seems expensive and time-consuming, but here are five of the many reasons it is not only worth it but ultimately essential.

1. Mobile Friendly Applies to More Than Just Phones:

Many people forget or don’t realize that mobile-friendly sites are used by tablets as well. When you take a look at how quickly the tablet market is growing and replacing both PC’s and laptops, it is terrifying to realize the number of customers you will be unable to reach if you remain without a mobile friendly website. Studies conducted by Gear have shown that within five years most people may be without PC’s and laptops. Without a mobile-friendly website you are looking at 80% of possible clients that you would be unable to service.

When the next US president steps up to the inauguration lectern in January, Barack Obama will leave his post as the nation's commander in chief and hand off the country to his successor.

He's already announced that he will be staying in DC after office, but he might also try his hand in the venture-capital market.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Obama voiced his little-known inclination toward the private sector, specifically Silicon Valley and the VC scene.

The City Of The Future Is In Ohio Co Design business design

KELSEY CAMPBELL-DOLLAGHAN 06.24.16 9:00 AM In some ways, Columbus is the every-city. It’s at the very center of a state known as the "heart" of America. It is not home to the country’s technological nexus, like San Francisco. It’s not a creative hub the way Portland is. It’s not hosting a thriving experiment in the marijuana industry, like Denver.

Yet Columbus managed to beat out all of these cities—and some 80 others—to win an enormous amount of money that will help it shape itself into something else: the first truly "smart" city.

Sand Castle Beach Holidays Water Sea Summer

To the young, summer seems to stretch out endlessly. Long days make time feel expansive. By middle age, though, the days can blur into each other. June becomes September at a rate disconcerting enough to make you wonder if it’s at all possible to slow time down.

There is, of course, one obvious way to stop the acceleration. Studies of subjective time perception find that unpleasant activities, such as waiting in an airport security line, or suffering through a bout of food poisoning, do indeed make the seconds feel miserably long.

Downtown Boston has undergone an astonishing change in only a few years—think back to the way it was, even in 2000—but that's just the beginning, according to the speakers at our Future of Downtown Boston at the Boston Seaport Aloft. The area's well on its way to being a true a 24-hour city.

Bisnow Nixon Peabody principal Larry DiCara kicked off the event with opening remarks, noting the transformation of Boston is being driven by a number of factors. Not only do younger people want to live in Boston's urban environment, but they're willing to live in smaller spaces, as long as high-quality public spaces and transit are conveniently accessible.

In January 2016, a public-private partnership representing many of Baltimore’s most influential anchor institutions, community-based organizations, and private companies declared their intent to develop an innovation district in West Baltimore dubbed the “Innovation Village.”  This week, the Innovation Village steering committee announced several initiatives aimed at supporting inclusive economic growth in West Baltimore neighborhoods including free Wi-Fi, entrepreneurial assistance programs, and the development of a food hub.

Take an advanced technology. Add a twist of fantasy. Stir well, and watch the action unfold.

It’s the perfect recipe for a Hollywood tech-disaster blockbuster. And clichéd as it is, it’s the scenario that we too often imagine for emerging technologies. Think superintelligent machines, lab-bred humans, the ability to redesign whole species – you get the picture.

Seven years ago, Kickstarter was born. Over its lifetime, the platform has helped fund roughly 100,000 creative projects that otherwise would have remained pipe dreams to their founders.

Then there are those mega-rounds going to VC-backed startups. Although this activity cooled in the fourth quarter of 2015 -- down to $11.4 billion, from $20.3 billion in the third quarter -- VC funding has helped tech startups remain private.

Passions are running high ahead of this Thursday’s vote on Britain’s continued membership in the European Union, with the “Brexit” campaign issuing overwrought warnings of five million Turks poised to invade, while the “Bremain” camp—including the government—warns of economic disaster if the country leaves.

It’s just the kind of mudslinging battle that calm, rational scientists normally avoid.

Intelligence, or IQ, isn’t what you know, but rather the pace at which you acquire new information. Longitudinal studies have shown that IQ is fixed at an early age, so you’re stuck with what you’ve got.

While IQ is far from being the only thing that determines success in life -- research shows that it isn’t even the most important factor -- a high IQ still isn’t a bad thing to have. In fact, I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t mind having one.

Thousand Oaks-based biotech giant Amgen has put its backing behind a new, life sciences incubator, called QB3@953. According to Amgen, it will provide a five year, platinum sponsorship of the San Francisco life sciences incubator, to accelerate the development of new therapies to improve human health. Financial details of the sponsorship were not detailed. As part of that sponsorship, Amgen said it will be providing two awards each year with a company receiving one year of lab space at QB3@953, in addition to connections to Amgen's executives and other resources. QB3@953 provides lab space to life sciences startups, which Amgen says is a "key obstacle" for life sciences startups. A similar effort, the Ventura BioCenter, operates just around the corner from Amgen in the Thousand Oaks area.

Artificial Intelligence Intelligent Person Man

We have been hearing predictions for decades of a takeover of the world by artificial intelligence. In 1957, Herbert A. Simon predicted that within 10 years a digital computer would be the world’s chess champion.  That didn’t happen until 1996.  And despite Marvin Minsky’s 1970 prediction that “in from three to eight years we will have a machine with the general intelligence of an average human being,” we still consider that a feat of science fiction.
