Ever heard of a hospital setting up a digital health operation within a single center of excellence? We hadn’t, either, until this week, when the Temple Lung Center at Temple University Health System in Philadelphia announced the establishment of the Center for Digital Health.

Dr. Gerard Criner, founding chair of Temple’s Department of Thoracic Medicine and Surgery, which started up in February, leads the Center for Digital Health. He also founded and continues to serve as chairman of  HGE Health Care Solutions, a Temple spinoff that has built a mobile app that helps clinicians manage patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder.

We told you Tuesday about the first-ever White House demo day on Tuesday, which featured 32 early- to growth-stage companies sharing their personal stories and demonstrating their technologies.

And now, some prizes: Six Greater Washington accelerators were awarded prizes from the Small Business Administration, the SBA announced. It was part of a $4.4 million national program encouraging entrepreneurship, according to the SBA.

With nearly three-quarters of all U.S. venture capital investment landing in just three states—California, New York, and Massachusetts—serial entrepreneur and AOL cofounder Steve Case has been hitting the road to promote other startup ecosystems across America as part of his Rise of the Rest bus tour.

The tour, which has already made stops and investments in 14 cities since its rollout last year, announced its next five hubs on the road map—Baltimore, Philadelphia, Buffalo, Manchester, and Portland—during the first ever Demo Day held at the White House this week.

GSK and Save the Children have launched their third annual $1 million healthcare innovation award that rewards innovations in healthcare that have helped to reduce child deaths in developing countries.

Organisations from across developing countries can nominate examples of innovative health approaches they have implemented till September 7, 2015. These approaches must have resulted in tangible improvements to under five child survival rates, be sustainable and have the potential to be scaled-up and replicated.

Michigan State University has named a point person to continue developing a campuswide culture of entrepreneurship and innovation among its undergraduate students.

Neil Kane is the university’s first director of undergraduate entrepreneurship. An experienced entrepreneur, business executive and Forbes contributor, Kane will create a unified entrepreneurship strategy and introduce new programs, courses and initiatives focused on entrepreneurship and innovation.

BioHealth Innovation's Relevant Health, a recently launched health technology startup accelerator focused on bringing products to market, participated in the U.S. Small Business Administration's (SBA) Second Annual Growth Accelerator Fund Competition. Relevant Health was among 80 winners from a pool of 400 applicants from across the country, including all 50 states, the District of Columbia and territories. Relevant Health was the only accelerator in Maryland to be recognized with this honor.

The total prize amount for all of the winning accelerators was $4.4 million, and the announcement came yesterday at 4:00 p.m. EDT when President Barack Obama formally named the winners during an event at the White House. The President discussed the future of innovation and entrepreneurship as demonstrated by individuals and businesses within the United States who participated in the White House Demo Day. SBA Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet played a similar role in ceremonies in Los Angeles as part of the same program.

Anyone who's had an eye exam in the past few decades has stared into an autorefractor—the device, the size of microwave oven and costing up to $20,000, that bounces an infrared beam off the retina to determine the correction needed for an image to come into focus. New York City startup Smart Vision Labs has developed a $3,950 handheld replacement, the SVOne, that utilizes an iPhone's camera, processor, and wireless connection to examine patients anywhere and manage their cases online.

Some entrepreneurs wonder if they should bypass traditional investors and go with crowdfunding, based on the assumption that it’s easier to raise money that way. While it’s true that some successful startups sowed their very prolific seeds through crowdfunding—eventually attracting larger VC money—it may not be the panacea you think it is.

Equity crowdfunding is getting even more interest now that the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has passed Regulation A+ updates. This regulation is a part of Title IV of the Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act.

The world population is continuing to grow for various reasons, and it’s growing fast.

A recent report released by the United Nations revealed that the current world population is 7.3 billion, is expected to reach 8.5 billion by 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050 and 11.2 billion in 2100.

The report indicates that the growth is pretty concentrated in nine particular countries: India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Tanzania, the United States, Indonesia and Uganda.

Millions of Americans fly on planes made by Embraer. They may even know the name of the aircraft manufacturer. But if they had to guess what country Embraer is from, many would probably guess wrong.

Embraer is from Brazil. It is the largest manufacturer of regional jets in the world and among the top five aircraft manufacturers globally. “In a high-tech area as regional jets, the largest firm at present happens to be from Brazil. Who would have anticipated this a few years ago?” says Mauro Guillen, a Wharton professor of international management.

A new arm of the U.S. government is working to create the world’s fastest supercomputer within the next 10 years. President Obama signed an executive order on Wednesday creating the National Strategic Computing Initiative (NSCI), which will coordinate research, development, and deployment of ultra-powerful computer systems. NSCI’s first task, according to the White House, is to whip up a computer 20 times more powerful than China's Tianhe-2—currently the leading supercomputer in the world.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Inventors, innovators, entrepreneurs and startups have a new resource from which to draw a variety of support, including funding. It's the Technology Commercialization Center at UNC, launching with $2.2 million in funding.

The Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Kenan-Flagler Business School announced the center's launch Tuesday.
