It seems improbable, and yet new research shows satellites can not only spot whales, but help scientists distinguish between species. The findings have major implications for conservation, particularly in hard-to-reach locales (which is to say, basically the whole ocean).

Village Global is leveraging its network of tech luminaries to support the next generation of entrepreneurs.

The $100 million early-stage venture capital firm, which counts as limited partners (LPs) Microsoft’s Bill Gates, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, Alphabet’s Eric Schmidt, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, LinkedIn’s Reid Hoffman and many other high-profile techies, quietly announced on Friday that the accelerator it piloted earlier this year would become a permanent fixture.

Earth, our ocean-dominated world, stores away a vast majority of the planet's accumulating heat in the seas. 

In fact, over 90 percent of the planet's rising warmth — specifically trapped by human-created greenhouse gas emissions — is absorbed by the deep, salty waters.

For the last half-century, scientists have worked to put a more precise number on just how much heat the oceans take up each year, and for good reason: More heat absorption might provide evidence that our pale blue dot is increasingly sensitive to the heat-trapping carbon amassing in our atmosphere — which is likely at its highest levels in 15 million years.

A new research from Business.org has revealed the states that put in the most and least hours on the job every week. The hours between the most and least hours is just a little over four hours, which brings the national average to 38.8 hours per week. This is still slightly lower than the traditional 40 hour week most Americans work.

It follows a bombshell New York Times report last week that named executives who had been accused of sexual misconduct, including Andy Rubin, the creator of the mobile operating system Android. Rubin denied any misconduct.

A small, uninhabited island in northern Japan may have “disappeared” after being worn away by waves, according to the country’s coast guard.

The island called Esanbehana Kita Kojima was located just 1,640 ft. from a village on the northern coast of Hokkaido before it vanished from sight, Japanese broadcaster NHK reports.

New report from Startup Genome, with support of Kauffman Foundation, finds strong startup potential in six mid-sized U.S. cities

Startups in Springfield (MA) sell to global markets at a surprisingly high rate. Founders in Albuquerque and New Orleans enjoy supportive local cultures. Reno and Fresno welcome entrepreneurs from elsewhere. Hartford has high shares of female and immigrant founders.
