When you have been on the startup firing line, you quickly learn that any insight from experts and entrepreneurs who have been there before you can make the difference between failure and success. Yet, many new entrepreneurs brazenly assume they are bulletproof, and march blindly into the fray. The result is that half or more of startups fail in the first two years.

Newswise — Air pollution increases in South East Asia, combined with pollution cuts in Europe, may have had an important influence on European and Asian weather patterns in recent decades, new research has found.

Analysis of weather records and climate models by scientists at the University of Reading revealed that changes in air pollution levels in the two regions was likely the primary driving force behind changing atmospheric conditions that favoured prolonged summer extremes in Europe, as well as causing dry spells in Central Asia.

Almost a third of people report at least one ongoing symptom between 6 and 12 months after their coronavirus infection, a survey of 152,000 people in Denmark has found.

The study includes one of the largest groups yet of people who were not hospitalised with COVID, and followed them for longer than other major studies, the researchers from Denmark's State Serum Institute (SSI) said.

The sculpture created by the researchers

Newswise — Geologists at Lund University in Sweden have mapped 300 years of research on the prehistoric marine reptiles known as ichthyosaurs. Using a uniquely well-preserved fossil, the team has also created the scientifically most up-to-date reconstruction of an ichthyosaur currently available.

Fish lizards, or ichthyosaurs, were a very successful group of animals that, much like today's whales, migrated from land to the oceans where they thrived for about 160 million years. These dolphin-like reptiles lived from the Early Triassic to the Late Cretaceous, about the same time as dinosaurs ruled the Earth.

TOKYO (AP) — Two big names in Japanese electronics and autos are joining forces to produce an electric vehicle together.

Sony Group Corp. and Honda Motor Co. agreed to set up a joint venture this year to start selling an electric vehicle by 2025, both sides said Friday.

The plan is to bring together Honda’s expertise in mobility development, technology and sales with Sony’s imaging, telecommunication, network and entertainment expertise.

A union of traditionally different manufacturing businesses is uncommon for Japan. But it makes sense in the age of electric vehicles, which lack gasoline-powered engines and have complicated electronics.

“Kyiv needs you and your drone at this moment of fury!” read a Facebook post late last week from the Ukrainian military, calling for citizens to donate hobby drones and to volunteer as experienced pilots to operate them.

Startup Our Next Energy said a new $65 million funding round will enable it to accelerate development of a long-range battery and begin evaluating potential sites next quarter for its first U.S. battery plant.

Michigan-based ONE in December said a prototype of its new high-energy Gemini battery, retrofitted in a Tesla Model S sedan, delivered more than 750 miles of range between charges -- far in excess of the best production electric vehicles on the market.

Are you searching for VC? Without success? Do you really want VCs to finance you?

A common belief of many entrepreneurs is that they can grow their “high-potential,” unproven venture if they get venture capital (VC). Many business schools seem to feel the same way, which is why they focus on first-mover ideas and design-based innovation followed by pitch competitions, angel capital, and venture capital.

Farming and technology 2021 08 30 03 24 21 utc

Staying connected means far more than simply catching up on social media or carrying a mobile phone in your pocket; it’s become critical in virtually every aspect of our lives. From providing the network needed to conduct daily tasks such as virtual learning and remote work, to lesser known applications of connected technology in industries like agriculture, connectivity plays a pivotal role in providing the services and resources needed to sustain the growing population and keep up with innovation. However, despite the realized benefits of connectivity, rural communities – farms included – are still underserved when it comes to broadband, meaning farmers currently lack sufficient connectivity to take full advantage of advanced technology to keep the world fed, clothed and fueled.

The horrific invasion of Ukraine by Russia has brought with it a higher likelihood of cyberwarfare resulting in an increased focus on cybersecurity. A natural reaction by owners of businesses, particularly small businesses, may be to conclude that the invasion of a country 4,700 miles away cannot impact the security of the information they gather and store. These business owners may even wager that cyberattacks are made only on large institutions. But even if cybercriminals do not target specific small businesses, these cybercriminals can target networks and systems and in the process negatively affect these businesses. Thus, now is the time to rethink these conclusions, as no one is immune from cyberattacks from any place at any time.
