CalWave's xWave generator after 10 months of fully submerged open-ocean testingCalWaveCalWave has been working on its xWave clean power technology for many years now, and has announced the successful conclusion of an extended open-ocean test off the coast of San Diego, in which the device demonstrated over 99% system uptime.

Wave energy is one of the less common renewable energy sources, and while there are many wave energy projects under development, the industry itself can be considered more or less embryonic at this stage. There's some promise in it; as CalWave points out, "ocean waves are 20-60 times more energy-dense, predictable and consistent compared to other forms of renewable energy."

Rear view of man walking along a path lined with t 2022 03 04 02 38 09 utcThere’s a ubiquitous crop that slurps up unsustainable quantities of water, gets doused in chemicals and fertilizers to maintain its growth—and yet doesn’t provide us with any food. This crop is cotton, and it covers 34.5 million hectares of arable farmland around the world.

Now, a team of Swedish researchers propose that if we replace a share of this crop with fibers made from the wood of fast-growing poplar trees, we could free up millions of hectares of cotton land for growing food instead.

Start Up Doodle IllustrationThe devastating toll of the pandemic is all too clear on our families, our cities, our nation. But we are now beginning to see an underappreciated side of the pandemic: a coast-to-coast surge in American ingenuity, drive and determination.

Even as the pandemic damaged or even destroyed many businesses, it also provided new opportunities and fostered creativity in unexpected ways. For some, it meant a recalibration of life priorities. For others, it provided the gift of time and attention to start something new or follow through on long-deferred dreams. More new businesses were created in 2020 than any other year on record, and 2021 wasn’t far behind. The one-year survival rate of those new companies topped 80% in 2021 for the first time since 1999, according to the Kauffman Indicators of Entrepreneurship.

Online distance learning asian teacher in headpho 2022 07 19 02 04 09 utcStarting a business on your own can be incredibly exciting but scary. If you are off to the wild west of entrepreneurship, it can be a good idea to be armed with a big dream, a solid plan and a partner you can count on.

However, in my experience, finding the right co-founder was even more complicated than modern-day dating. Thus, I decided to stop waiting for Mr. or Ms. Right and do it myself.

Businessman drinking coffee 2022 02 02 04 49 00 utcThere’s a lot I’ve learned along the way to finding business and financial success before the age of 30. Below is the advice I would offer to today’s entrepreneurs.

Be brave.

Innovation always involves a leap into the unknown. Courage is a fundamental prerequisite for entrepreneurial success. This includes a willingness to swim against the tide, communicate clearly at all levels, and to discuss, criticize and inform. However, it’s precisely the unwillingness to leave your comfort zone that causes many young entrepreneurs to fail.

Pros and cons concept plus contra minus empty lis 2022 02 22 06 40 34 utcAre startups good to work for? This is a question I recently navigated with my students in an Entrepreneurship course at Columbia University. After navigating both the traditional corporate and startup world, I can confidently speak to the pros and cons of working at a startup. The truth is, the answer is less about whether it's a black-and-white "yes" or "no," and is more about your personal preferences and needs.

Bitcoin investment stockbroker risk analysis trend 2022 02 02 03 57 31 utcStartup founders and investors are looking at what could be a murky investment outlook over the next few months or quarters. Slowing markets, rising interest rates and turmoil abroad has caused fluctuation in the markets. While the tech sector may continue providing growth opportunity long term, the near term may also be volatile enough that many founders and investors might be forced to take a different path than originally planned.

Nurturing innovation at universities ehsanur raza ronnyThe government's "Perspective Plan of Bangladesh 2021-2041" has identified innovation as a key enabler to accelerate our economic growth. It aims at increasing the contribution of total factor productivity (TFP) to economic growth from the current 0.3 percent to 4.5 percent in 2041. Any improvement in TFP contribution essentially requires technological innovation, leading to the commercialisation of research results and ideas in the form of products, processes, services, etc. Indeed, as Robert Solow – the 1987 Nobel Prize winner in economics – states, "Technological innovation is the ultimate source of productivity and economic growth."

Solar-powered water extractor. (CREDIT: SOURCE.CO)By harvesting water vapor from the air and condensing it into liquid, atmospheric water generators can essentially pull water from the air, and these devices hold a lot of promise for providing an independent source of drinking water.

And although drought-stricken regions and locations without safe or stable water sources are prime candidates for water production and purification devices such as those, residences and commercial buildings in the developed world could also benefit from their use, and they make a great fit for off-grid homes and emergency preparedness kits.

Media relations logo 9 92 16DURHAM, N.H.—Angel investors—wealthy individuals who provide essential funds for start-ups—often invest under conditions of extreme uncertainty. While their funds can be vital to early-stage ventures, researchers at the University of New Hampshire found that angels’ egos can play a significant role in their investment decisions—the bigger the ego, the larger and more diverse the deal and the lower the number of co-investors.

Tel Aviv University brain immunologist Prof. Lior Mayo (courtesy of Tel Aviv University)An Israeli study has eliminated glioblastoma, the most deadly brain tumors, in mice by identifying and destroying their “power source.”

The Tel Aviv University scientists behind the peer-reviewed research are now working on identifying drugs to replicate the effect in humans. They hope to find an existing drug that may work and then repurpose it, which they say could happen within two years if things go smoothly.
