The Information Technology & Innovation Foundation has released a new analysis showing that the United States is continuing to fall behind other developed countries in funding for university research. That has occurred despite the U.S. boasting world-leading research universities that have played a crucial role in driving American technological supremacy since World War II.

Over the past several years, corporate subsidiaries have gone from performing necessary but relatively low-value functions for multinational firms to serving as proving grounds for vital drivers of knowledge, innovation, and value creation. Some subsidiaries are now dubbed centers of excellence (CoEs) by their parent company, meaning they cultivate specific skills and knowledge that can be conveyed to and leveraged along a multinational’s network.

suburb

In fact, around 175 million Americans live in the country's suburbs — that's more than half the country's total population, which is around 329 million.

Factors like good public schools, low crime rates, and affordable housing costs can make certain suburbs more desirable than others. A recent study by personal finance platform GoBankingRates found the 17 best US suburbs where the average monthly mortgage is less than $1,000.

Is China’s intellectual property (IP) regime really all that bad? It has become generally accepted that the ongoing U.S.-China trade war is at least partially in response to Communist China’s practice of forcing technology transfers and its extremely poor protection of IP. But China’s IP regime is not as bad as the ongoing trade war narrative suggests. Instead, I see a paradox in China’s IP regime: while certainly risky in a number of ways, it is often less risky than many Western executives assume. Three myths about China’s IP regime hold back executives considering investments in the country – and the ability to see through these offers much needed nuance when strategizing for the Chinese market.

Our world has never witnessed a time of greater promise for improving human health. Many of today’s health advances have stemmed from a long arc of discovery that begins with strong, steady support for basic science. Unicode Consortium releases data on the most frequently used emoji

Unicode Consortium is the standard bearer of emoji. The nonprofit organization maintains the Unicode Standard, the universal system for the numeric encoding of letters and characters so they can be understood across computer systems, which means it chooses and regulates the symbols that appear on your phone. This week, the organization revealed 168 new emoji as part of its version 12.1 release, including symbols for a wide array of new animals, food, and activities—like a parachute, for all of the times you do that (or maybe just to hint when you need to escape a sticky situation).

Next year marks the 40th anniversary of the passage of the Bayh-Dole Act. With election day looming, 2020 is likely to be the most politically contentious year of our lifetime. The country is divided right down the middle on many fundamental issues. Rather than debate, the opposing sides often descend into personal attacks, even questioning one another’s patriotism. This isn’t the time you want issues you care about dragged into the public arena, but patent rights and the Bayh-Dole Act have been summoned into the gladiator pit. Happy birthday, indeed.

Many of the region’s successful life science startups are built on technologies that were licensed from The National Institutes of Health (NIH), The National Cancer Institute (NCI), other government biomedical research institutions and Biohealth Capital Region (BHCR) research universities like Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland.

An often overshadowed regional source of promising life science/medical device technology is the Department of Defense (DoD). Several local companies like Emergent Biosolutions, Adaptive Phage Therapeutics and ARMR Systems, among others, have leveraged DoD tech and other defense-related agency resources to launch and build their successful and growing organizations.

The business world is often portrayed as a highly competitive ecosystem in which you need to fight to get ahead. To a good extent, that’s very true. Entrepreneurs need thick skin, drive and intense focus to succeed. But it’s also important for entrepreneurs to remember the value of kindness.
