Equity crowdfunding is a new innovation in early-stage company financing. It allows start-ups and growing companies to effectively conduct “mini-IPOs,” offering shares to the members of the general public, under a reduced disclosure regime and in lieu of issuing a full prospectus—a document filed with the SEC that outlines a company’s financial health for potential investors.

Different regulators in different countries have taken different approaches to equity crowdfunding, with varying effects on the development of each of their respective financial ecosystems. Some countries have taken very liberal approaches to equity crowdsourcing, while others are very protectionist.

We frequently hear people, companies, and the media advocating for exercise -- and for good reason.

Exercise pays many positive dividends in life. It is why so many people swear to it, why we frequently see people running the streets and why so many hold annual gym memberships. There are countless valid health arguments for why you should exercise, and doing so makes you feel better.

At the China Development Forum, in Beijing in March, Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor said: “In my view, the Greater Bay Area has good potential to become not only the Silicon Valley of the East but also Silicon Valley and Wall Street within the same city cluster.” In addition, I believe the bay area scheme has great potential to be a global AI centre, supplying artificial intelligence technology not only to this region, but throughout the world. Here’s why.

FDA Logo

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, regulates, as a medical device, software that is intended or labeled for healthcare purposes. The FDA divides the regulation of software into the following three categories:

Software which meets the definition of a medical device under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Such software is referred to as software as a medical device (SaMD); Software that is integral to a medical device, also known as software in a medical device (SiMD); and Software used in the manufacture of a medical device. This article focuses on the FDA’s Digital Health Software Precertification program, or Pre-Cert program, and its evolving, forward-looking regulation of SaMD; and on an ongoing Pre-Cert Pilot program that is an important step along the path to implementing the Pre-Cert program.

Fassumptioneedback is a daily staple of my work as an executive coach. I am often giving direct feedback to the leaders I work with, sharing 360-degree feedback from the leader’s colleagues, and then helping them process and reflect on the feedback they receive.

One piece of feedback that the executives I coach receive over and over again from their direct reports is: “She doesn’t give enough helpful feedback.”

When I ask these direct reports about the impact this has on them, I find that, in the absence of understanding why they’re getting so little feedback, they often make up their own explanations.

The University City Science Center has had a big year.

The Center itself has been around for half a century, created as a place for innovators to collaborate and advance science and technology-based economic development. And while a lot has changed in 55 years — it finally has a Wikipedia page, after all — Center leaders say the mission has largely remained the same.

In today’s world, a state’s economic growth demands investment in innovation and high-tech industries — especially for a natural resource-rich state like ours that must leverage our existing resource base to diversify our economy for the future.

It’s a straightforward proposition. If we believe that more and better jobs — opportunities with wages that are more than 70 percent higher than Oklahoma’s average — are desirable, required and achievable, we need to double down on the things that we are doing well and step up our commitment in the areas where we aren’t so strong.

Most of us buy into a certain set of myths when it comes to feelings on the job. Even though emotions play a central role in our lives, we’re trained to check them at the door before we head into work. We hesitate before talking openly about the monstrous emotions that lurk beneath the surface at startups. We’re told to “follow your head, not your heart” when it comes to making career decisions.

patent

For many developing countries, the promise of innovation-fueled economic growth remains unfulfilled. Even with well-established intellectual property systems in place, few local innovators benefit. Instead, patent grants to foreigners far outnumber those to local applicants, despite a strong local innovative culture.

Patents drive value creation for individual inventors and small enterprises that can help these countries grow. They attract investment. And they provide protection when small firms need to collaborate with third parties to implement their vision. Without access to patents, innovators find themselves at palpable disadvantage in the market. When these inventors cannot compete, we are all deprived of their innovation.

ceo

You may be starting in your first entry-level position, or you maybe be an executive VP at an established company. Wherever you are in your career, if you’re ambitious and goal-driven, you may have one question in your mind: will I be the CEO someday?

Becoming a CEO often requires a certain amount of being in the right place at the right time, but having certain qualities will significantly boost the chance that you’ll be considered for the spot of CEO -- or any leadership position, for that matter. To find more about what those essential qualities are, we reached out to Tiffany Franklin, executive career consultant and founder of TJF Career Coaching, who broke down what it takes to be considered as CEO material.

According to Benjamin Franklin, the only certainties are death and taxes. But with all due respect to the Founding Father, he forgot to mention something just as common, at least for entrepreneurs: fear.

Fear can be an everyday state of mind for modern entrepreneurs. After all, when big problems happen, the world knows it at once and responds without remorse or filters. Even before BuzzFeed announced in January that it would lay off about 220 workers, CNN and other news outlets had already caught wind of that scuttlebutt. That left CEO Jonah Peretti in the unenviable position of explaining why 15 percent of his workforce would soon be searching Indeed and Glassdoor for new roles.

Earning $100,000 isn't all it's cracked up to be if you live in an expensive city.

In a recent study, MagnifyMoney found the top 10 metro areas where you can feel broke — even if you make six figures. They determined the monthly disposable income of a hypothetical family with one child in 100 metro areas by subtracting monthly expenses, savings, debt, and taxes from an $8,333 monthly paycheck (equivalent to a $100,000 yearly pre-tax salary).
