We all have greatness inside us—we just need to find it and give it life.

Todd Herman, author of The Alter Ego Effect, tells us exactly how to do that. As a high-performance coach to ambitious entrepreneurs, athletes, and leaders, Herman for two decades has been helping clients tap their inner greatness. His advice for those who feel “blocked” in some way is to find an alter ego that represents their “best self.” We can find alter egos in mythology, movies, TV, family members, or the workplace.

airplane travel

Some entrepreneurs believe travel to be nice but unnecessary. Or, a waste of their time, when they could be in their office, nurturing leads or making sales calls. The other half knows that it's important, but don't feel like it could benefit them or their business, even if it is a working vacation.

CEOs are quickly derailed without a sense of community.

Recently, I was listening to the CFO of a large industrial firm who complained non-stop about her CEO. In meetings, he would often lose focus, have fits of anger and harass people. The CEO’s mercurial style was impacting morale and, increasingly, sales. Some subordinates wondered whether their CEO was falling apart in front of their eyes.

Successful people tend to have very positive inner dialogues.

They know how to nurture their own personal growth. They believe they can do whatever it is they set their mind to. But most of all, they believe in themselves.

If you look at the differences between those who achieve their goals and those who fail, what you'll usually find is a lack of self belief. Those who fail tend to plan for failure.

Microsoft’s Zune might have been a decent media player, but it wasn’t what many would consider innovative.

The portable media device was meant to be Microsoft’s answer to Apple’s iPod. In reality, it was a “too little, too late” copycat. Shortly before its discontinuation in June 2012, Robbie Bach, then-leader of Microsoft’s home entertainment and mobile business, admitted that his leadership had a lot to do with the flop.

A lot of innovators that I have met are impatient people. By the time we start working together, they are already fed up with their company. They know something needs to be done and they just want to jump in and get started. So they will take whatever opportunity they get and run with it. I believe that this is the wrong approach. As much as we are keen to get started, it is also important to ensure that we are working on the right things. While I agree that we have to start somewhere with innovation, this does not necessarily mean we have to start anywhere. There is a difference.
