salt

Growing populations and tightening water supplies have spurred people in many places—including the Middle East, Australia, California and China—to look to the oceans and other salty waters as a source of new drinking water. But desalination plants are energy intensive and create a potentially environment-harming waste called brine (made up of concentrated salt and chemical residues), which is dumped into the ocean, injected underground or spread on land.

As an entrepreneur, you have to improvise and adapt quickly to survive and thrive in the face of the unpredictable challenges of the market. But this improvisation a not a comedy, although there are some distinct correlations, in relation to reacting, adapting, and communicating. idea

Every business knows it needs to innovate. What isn’t so clear is how to go about it. There is no shortage of pundits, blogs and conferences that preach the gospel of agility, disruptive innovation, open innovation, lean startups or whatever else is currently in vogue. It can all be overwhelming.

The reality is that there is no one “true” path to innovation. In researching my book, Mapping Innovation, I found that organizations of all shapes and sizes can be great innovators. Some are lean and nimble, while others are large and bureaucratic. Some have visionary leaders, others don’t. No one model prevails.

This Study Disproves a Common Myth About Hangovers Time

Hangovers are virtually unavoidable for the drinking public. But despite how common they are, scientists don’t fully understand how to cure or prevent hangovers, or even what causes them. In the absence of evidence, people have come up with plenty of their own rituals, from pre-bedtime routines (chugging water) to strict rules about when to drink which type of alcohol (beer before wine).

A frequent concern I hear from aspiring entrepreneurs is “I have invented a great product, but I have no idea where to start in setting up a company, to avoid all the tax and legal problems I hear about on the news.” In fact, this is a complex question, with answers that are different all around the world, but I have some general rules of thumb that apply here in the USA to get you started:

As Philly Startup Leaders gathered the sixth cohort of its accelerator together this week to plan for their futures, the entrepreneurship-focused nonprofit is also looking back at its own.

Have you ever dreamed of walking away from the daily grind and never looking back? The reality is that most people today don’t feel a real connection to their jobs. The latest Gallup State of the American Workplace report reveals that almost 70% of employees are disengaged at work or not engaged at all—they are just there. These statistics paint a bleak picture of corporate life. Yet, there are plenty of entrepreneurs out there making money doing what they love.

Point: Laptops are a menace, undermining how students take notes in class and distracting not only those using them but also their neighbors.

Counterpoint: Laptops are a lifeline, allowing students with disabilities to participate fully in class.

Plenty of professors have strong opinions about whether laptops belong in the classroom. They also pride themselves on holding opinions based on research. The eyes and ears of corporate culture, executive assistants have a front-row seat to the integrity dilemmas faced by top management.

What is going on in the boardrooms and executive offices of this world? We catch glimpses through the media. For more than a year, continuous scandals have cast Facebook executives, including its COO Sheryl Sandberg, in a rather unflattering light. In November, Japanese authorities arrested former Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn – a corporate heavyweight – for under-reporting his salary and using company assets for his personal benefit.

In watching a marketing video for a Midwestern city this week, I was struck by how all such videos – with a few exceptions – are as predictable as a local evening newscast:

“Now let’s check that weather forecast. Bob, tell me you’re bringing us the sunshine and warm temperatures this weekend!”

I’m pretty sure you could transcribe the first 90 seconds of most economic development videos—and the first 10 slides of a PowerPoint—without even seeing the content. It usually starts off with a word about how much “opportunity” exists in said city, then quickly mentions “quality of life” as the number one reason to do business there.

With 2019 well underway, many entrepreneurs, business executives and tech enthusiasts are hopeful it will be a year of innovation and growth. However, based on a sluggish end to 2018 in the tech sector and Gartner’s 2019 tech predictions looking like a "redo with new names," according to Forbes contributor Steve Andriole, one has to wonder if the dust has started to settle in our current tech era. It may seem like a somewhat surprising revelation, but it's not too far fetched if we look back at history.
