meeting high five

As a start-up is growing, the responsibility of its success doesn’t just lie on the founder but also on the employees who are contributing to the growth journey of the company. So, no wonder that employees in a start-up are treated a wee bit differently than those in a corporate.

Employees in a start-up are encouraged to think and innovate like an entrepreneur. In fact, often people who want to become entrepreneurs start their journey by first working at a start-up.

A pod of beluga whales adopted a lost narwhal and it s too wholesome

A narwhal has been adopted by a pod of beluga whales in the St. Lawrence River, according to CBC, and please be warned, the wholesomeness of this story may be completely overwhelming.

The narwhal has been spotted in the same area for the past three years, according to Whales Online, over 1,000 kilometers south from its typical range — narwhals are typically found in the arctic, near countries like Canada and Russia.

TWashington DChere’s still no official word on where Amazon is planning to build its second headquarters, but a trail of clues may be leading to the Washington, D.C. area.

Just over a year after the tech company announced it was seeking a spot to put a $5 billion office expected to generate up to 50,000 jobs, a series of hints have people eyeing the nation’s capital for HQ2. Among the biggest indicators that D.C. may have won the bidding war is the fact that founder Jeff Bezos — along with Amazon’s board of directors — is reportedly in the nation’s capital this week. The group held a dinner Tuesday night, and Bezos is scheduled to speak at an unusually large meeting of the local Economic Club on Thursday, according to the Washington Post.

September holds the dubious honor of being the month that marked two cataclysmic events with profound global impact: the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that ignited the war on terror, and the Sept. 15, 2008, bankruptcy filing of Lehman Brothers that marked the beginning of the global financial crisis.

hurricane

Hurricane Florence, once a Category 4 storm, was downgraded to Category 1 before it made landfall near Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina early Friday morning. But experts say that despite the apparent demotion, Hurricane Florence still stands to be a destructive and deadly storm for those in its path.

“Just because the wind speeds came down … please do not let your guard down,” Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Brock Long said at a press conference Thursday, during which he highlighted dangers like flooding from storm surge. “This is a very dangerous storm. Storm surge is why many of you have been placed under evacuation and we are asking citizens to please heed a warning. Your time is running out.”

exercise

Experts like to say the best form of exercise is whatever kind you’ll actually do. But a new study finds that people who do team sports may be at an advantage over solitary exercisers.

The social interaction involved in partner and team sports may compound the plentiful benefits of physical activity, adding more years to your life than solo exercise, according to a study published Tuesday in Mayo Clinic Proceedings. Tennis, badminton and soccer are all better for longevity than cycling, swimming, jogging or gym exercise, according to the research.

Since Paul Bloom and Gregory Dees first urged social entrepreneurs to cultivate their ecosystem a decade ago, “ecosystem” frameworks for innovation and entrepreneurship are finally moving into mainstream economic development practice. These frameworks use the metaphor of a biological ecosystem to refer to the complex, dynamic environments in which innovators operate—environments characterized by an array of interacting organizations, individuals (collectively referred to as “actors”), elements, relationships, and conditions that either enable or impede innovation.

team

The most powerful innovation comes when teams work together. Driving innovation means getting individual employees to be more innovative, but it also means getting high performance teams to innovate. How you form those teams will have a huge impact on their success. Here’s how to create what I call innovation dream teams.

alarm clock

U.S. companies are expected to spend more than $37 billion dollars on social media promotion annually each year by 2020, representing 24% of the economy’s total digital advertising spend. It’s an astounding number, given that the vast majority of social media managers charged with getting customers to click on posts and through to their websites operate with little strategy beyond what we call “spray and pray,” an approach that litters social media with firm generated content in the hopes that one or more of those posts draw in customers.

well done

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sep 12, 2018--The Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) today applauded the introduction of the American Innovation Act of 2018 (H.R. 6756), which includes a provision that would protect investments in start-ups from inadvertently triggering the net operating loss (NOL) limitations under Section 382 of the tax code. R&D-intensive biotech start-ups frequently accumulate substantial NOLs in their early, pre-revenue years, given their typical reliance on investor capital for more than a decade before realizing any product revenue.

A core component of Gov. Murphy’s policy agenda is an “innovation economy.” We agree, as other states, countries and regions, looking to redefine their own economies, have become increasingly aggressive in attracting investment from innovator industries. If the bidding for Amazon’s second headquarters is any indication, the competition will only intensify.

The imbalance is well documented: The vast majority of funding in the entrepreneurship world goes to men—white men in particular.

According to one analysis, roughly 2 percent of venture capital funding in 2017 went to all-female teams, compared to 79 percent that went to all-male teams. A March 2018 report from the National Women’s Business Council cited a wide range of issues holding back women in entrepreneurship, from a lack of high-level networking opportunities to a systemic bias through “an unconscious association with less credibility and a lack of legitimacy” compared to men.

Dmvg cyber security

Cybersecurity influencers believe that a new wave of system-embedded devices present a formidable challenge to their field. The Internet of Things (IoT) will introduce a vast amount of small computers, with inadequate security designs, that  use high-speed internet, and that combination has all the ingredients for a cyberspace disaster.

pizza

Whether you like it deep dish or thin crust, square-shaped or topped with pineapple, you probably have a go-to pizza order. Much like barbecue, after all, pizza draws fans with strong opinions.

Of course, the way a pizza looks and tastes will likely differ depending on where you are (and who’s making it). Though there’s no right or wrong pizza, most U.S. regions will defend their preferred variation to the end.

California is the great role model for America, particularly if you read the Eastern press.
