In 2019, we’ve seen more than a few companies—and leaders—take a hit for imbuing their work culture with questionable practices, from WeWork cofounder Adam Neumann’s propensity for private jets and free-flowing alcohol to the around-the-clock work ethic endorsed by former Away CEO Steph Korey.

Sometimes, the problems start with founders and executives who neglect to focus on company culture early on. In other cases, companies struggle to maintain their culture across departments and managers as their headcount grows.

Long before Microsoft's four-day-workweek experiments, Colorado school districts shifted to the same schedule, in part to entice teachers with a better work-life balance.

There was just one problem, says elementary-school teacher Kallie Leyba: "Teachers can't afford to ski."

Colorado teachers like Leyba say they already work longer than 40 hours to get paperwork done, on top of receiving among the lowest statewide educator pay. Colorado's shorter workweek hasn't helped these major issues, says Leyba, who serves as president of the state's American Federation of Teachers branch.

Avideo conferences two longtime business consultants, we make a point of keeping in touch with former colleagues. When we had lunch recently with one who had left consulting to join a startup, we were eager to hear how he was faring. As an entrepreneur there are two routes you can take: either create a service-based business where you trade your skill or knowledge for money or create a product-based business where you sell products to people. If the successful business is offering a service, it typically takes less money to start and has a smaller upside in regards to scale unless you can duplicate the service offering on a repeatable basis. The successful startup business offering a product potentially takes a lot more money to start but has more upside with respect to scale and repeatability. You can design one product and sell it it thousands of times.

Michael Morse, president and CEO of Louisiana Fish Fry, says the ability to sell a product nationwide depends on its position and an entrepreneur’s ability to capitalize on what will differentiate that product on the market.

“If you market it as Louisiana based, or if there’s a unique aspect, you’ve got a niche product,” Morse says. Matt Beeson, of Swamp Dragon Hot Sauce, suggests entrepreneurs “shout” their differentiator at people. At trade shows, he approaches people with four words: liquor-based hot sauce. “It gets their attention,” he says.

A few months ago, I was standing outside a Demo Day event in the heart of Silicon Valley. With the temperature approaching 90 degrees, I was beginning to feel the heat, and I wasn’t the only one sweating; with various entrepreneurs running from investor to investor, you could feel a palpable nervous energy in the air.

And yet, something struck me as different. Nearly every entrepreneur was discretely focused on building an outwardly sustainable enterprise.
