It’s hard to say no, but we should all do it more. No one will stay mad at you for wanting a life outside of work.

That was a lesson Erin Bury, the CEO of Willful, told me this week while we chatted for Proust Goes Tech. The idea struck a chord with me, and I’m guessing might with many of you, too. Bury’s found success in creating a list of different ways to say no that she can use to get out of certain events. I find comfort in deleting the Twitter application. Often.

If you like to put things off or surf the internet instead of getting work done, you might be able to blame your ancestors. Procrastination and laziness are based in our genetics, and you can be predisposed to both, says Sharad Paul, MD, author of The Genetics Of Health: Understand Your Genes for Better Health.

The American economy exists at the technological frontier. And higher living standards over the long run means developing and applying new technologies and techniques, not just more widely applying existing ones. (Not that doing the latter isn’t also important.) Continually pushing forward that tech frontier should be a key focus for pro-growth policymakers.

While medical device innovation is quite active—at the university level, within incubators, and even in the R&D labs of established firms—there is a substantial lack of products being developed for younger patients. Since pediatric devices have a limited patient base due to most children being relatively healthy (of course, a positive factor), it’s not a focus for a great number of companies as it does not offer the promise of a substantial financial return.

As a business advisor, one of the most frustrating things I see is the number of employees who are unhappy at work. Business owners don’t like it, the new generations think promotions will solve it, and productivity levels continue to suffer. According to the polls, only 32 percent of workers are engaged, and the rest spend much of their time wishing they were somewhere else.

Advocating for women’s advancement at work is integral for improving financial results, gender balance, and diversity in our workplaces and leadership teams. Yet data from the Working Mother Research Institute finds that, while 48% of men say they have received detailed information on career paths to P&L jobs in the past 24 months, just 15% of women report the same. And, while 54% of men had a career discussion with a mentor or sponsor in the past 24 months, only 39% of women did.

ten percent

This past February, we at #ANGELS challenged the tech industry to talk about, measure and fix #TheGapTable. The cap table — the document that records who has ownership in a startup — holds the roadmap to power in Silicon Valley. Cap table wealth enables individuals to fund the next generation of products and institutions that shape our industry — and increasingly the world — through investing, starting a venture firm, founding a startup or funding political and philanthropic campaigns. We called it #TheGapTable because we suspected that women have a disproportionately low share of startup equity and capture just a fraction of the industry’s wealth creation. We now have the data to prove it, thanks to Carta.

Everyone knows how important funding is for starting a venture, whether you are building a small business or high-growth tech startup. The capital needs of a venture change along with the venture’s stage — early-stage ventures might need help with product development costs, while established companies may need funding to expand to a new location or market segment.

crowdfunding

When Kelsey O’Callaghan raised $70,000 on Kickstarter to create “the world’s driest bathmat,” it seemed she and her fiancé were off and running toward their dream of launching their own business.

Then, they started shipping the product to backers and realized they’d woefully underestimated how much money they’d actually need. “We thought we had good margins,” she says, “but when it came down to it, our margins were not enough.”

idea

The idea was fresh in the mind of respiratory therapist Catherine Abee when she joined the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System in 2008.

Abee envisioned a device that would warm an area on the body of patients being tested for the amount of oxygen in their bloodstream. Warming the measurement site, she thought, would improve blood flow and thus provide a more accurate reading. The device, a heat-enhanced pulse oximeter, could be attached to one’s fingers, forehead, foot, ears, or toes.

With regard to modern affairs, the study reveals for the first time that the popular Hass avocado inherited about 61 percent of its DNA from Mexican varieties and about 39 percent from Guatemalan ones. Companies that have moved operations to the cloud still aren’t achieving the desired operational agility. A renewed focus on people, processes, and policies can unlock the cloud’s full potential.

Digital technologies continue to transform every facet of business. Across industries, CEOs have a consistent top priority—harness technology to jump-start growth, speed time to market, and foster innovation. Several factors are ratcheting up pressure: investors are valuing top-line revenue growth; rising customer expectations for simple cross-channel experiences are compelling companies to systematically tear down silos; and an organization’s ability to respond to market shifts is becoming a core differentiator. Meanwhile, digital leaders across sectors have changed the competitive landscape by demonstrating that agility and velocity can beat scale.
