BBC reporter breaks 'unbreakable' new phone, embarrasses phone CEO

The recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show held in Las Vegas was an elbows-out affair that left no room for shrinking violets. So Sonim CEO Bob Plaschke was surely chuffed when the BBC's flagship technology programme Click asked him to discuss on camera his company's new phone, the Sonim XP1, which he bullishly touted as being "unbreakable". Click reporter Dan Simmons put Plaschke's claim to the test.

MINI Cooper’s mainstreet marketing campaign thinks INSIDE the box

The team behind this recent Mini Cooper campaign have taken outdoor advertising to a whole new level: They’ve taken it down a notch.

In what could possibly be described as 3D, ground-level advertising (we’re open to suggestions), Dutch agency Ubachswisbrun/JWT created this ‘visual piece’ to demonstrate the compact nature of the MINI. We’re always impressed by memorable marketing. But memorable marketing that also emphasises a product’s point of difference… that’s thinking outside the box (or ‘in the box’, as the case may be).

An intriguing short film about numbers. All of them.

Most of us keep tabs on a few important numbers in our lives — like how much money we have in the bank, significant dates (birthdays, anniversaries, etc.), shoe size, that sort of thing. But numbers have been at the core of human understanding and evolution since long before Pythagoras was geeking out in 6th Century BC Greece.

This classy short film, “Number”, captures the essential role numbers play at all levels of life. It was named one of the 50 finalists in the ‘Nikon festival: Your Day in 140 seconds‘ contest.

Social Media’s BIG year — An illustrated video retrospective

2009 was the year that graphic sketch videos — brief clips using slickly produced animations to explain new products or complicated concepts — came of age. There was one to explain the origins of the Global Financial Crisis. Another on the History of the Internet. We were reminded of how Entrepreneurs Can Change the World. And creative agency BooneOakley took it to the next level. And then there was Google, using the illustrated video technique to simplify the web browser, Google Wave, Google Chrome OS, and Google Goggles.

It only seems appropriate that the year finished with a similarly styled graphical video recapping 2009’s BIG year in Social Media.

Can you codify the way innovators think? Simon says, Yes.

In an attempt to determine how great thinkers achieve their great outcomes, British marketing consultant Simon Sinek believes that he has stumbled upon a simple method to codify the way innovators think. He calls it the Golden Circle. In this presentation from TEDx Puget Sound, Sinek shows why it pays to be cynical.
