leadership - chess king

A title, position, and corner office may earn them extra pay and benefits, but respect is something that does not automatically come with a leadership position. This has to be earned and is one of the most difficult entities for a leader to acquire. Respected leaders are not always liked by everyone and not always popular. A leader may be well liked as a person, yet be weak and afraid to make difficult decisions, shows favoritism to those who stroke his/her ego, and be quite ineffective.

The truism about biopharma being a global industry has never been truer than when it comes to the top 20 IPOs for the first half of this year.

The U.S. had exactly half of the therapeutic, diagnostics, and tools/tech IPOs that were completed or began trading their first shares on public markets during January-June 2015. The rest of the world accounted for the other half, with Europe being home to seven of the 10 ex-U.S. top IPOs, followed by China, Canada, and Bermuda with one each.

Speed as a Habit First Round Review

I’ve long believed that speed is the ultimate weapon in business. All else being equal, the fastest company in any market will win. Speed is a defining characteristic — if not the defining characteristic — of the leader in virtually every industry you look at.

digital data

Companies today are rushing headlong to become more digital. But what does digital really mean?

For some executives, it’s about technology. For others, digital is a new way of engaging with customers. And for others still, it represents an entirely new way of doing business. None of these definitions is necessarily incorrect. But such diverse perspectives often trip up leadership teams because they reflect a lack of alignment and common vision about where the business needs to go. This often results in piecemeal initiatives or misguided efforts that lead to missed opportunities, sluggish performance, or false starts.

Newark, struggling with crime and poverty, hasn't always been an example of American government at its best.

The New Jersey city has repeatedly ranked as one of the most dangerous U.S. metropolitan areas in recent years. One publication declared it the worst city to start a business. "Newark is best known for being the site of an airport near New York, and for many of our readers, that’s the only reason to stop there," Conde Nast Traveler wrote in a 2013 article ranking it among the most unfriendly cities.

The effort to reinvigorate New Jersey’s economy from the ground up by supporting entrepreneurs and start-up companies got a boost Monday with the announcement of a new business accelerator backed by a $50 million fund.

The accelerator was unveiled at the Newark headquarters of Audible, the audio book producer, whose founder, Donald Katz, is one of the main initiators of the effort, at a press conference studded with business and political heavyweights.

Putting the “I” in innovation to help change the world I used to think that innovation was somebody else's job.  My job was just to envision the future by becoming a part of small bands of elite creative thought leaders that had access to the best minds and the biggest budgets within large institutions. Then members of those small bands started to meet up with greater challenges that we all can face such as cancer, heart disease, or mental illness. Wasn't there something that I could do to help tackle these larger world problems? Who am I, as just an individual, to be able to make a difference? Whose job is it to address these problems? As I explored, I realized how many ways that innovation can be my job; it’s everybody's job. Those who can, must, for those who can’t. Below are emerging ways where you can put the “I” in innovation and help change the world.

change

Ever tried to change anyone’s behavior at work? It can be extremely frustrating. So often the effort produces an opposite result: rupturing the relationship, diminishing job performance, or causing the person to dig in their heels. Still, some approaches clearly work better than others.

Would you rather receive $1,000, or have a 50% chance at receiving $2,000? Most people are risk averse and would prefer the definite thousand, but entrepreneurs are more likely to be tempted by a shot at the bigger prize.

A long line of research has documented the preferences of entrepreneurs: they take more risks, place more importance on autonomy, and tend to be overconfident. But what about the people who join startups? Are they after the same things as founders?

We all reach critical points in our lives where our mental toughness is tested. It might be a toxic friend or colleague, a dead-end job, or a struggling relationship.

Whatever the challenge, you have to be strong, see things through a new lens, and take decisive action if you want to move through it successfully.

Y Combinator on Monday announced a fellowship program for startup teams whose ideas aren't well-developed enough to apply for its flagship program. "A lot of good founders never get started because they can’t scrape together a relatively small sum of money at the idea stage," the Mountain View accelerator said in the blog announcing the program.

Many people sense that the way organizations are run today has been stretched to its limits. In survey after survey, businesspeople make it clear that in their view, companies are places of dread and drudgery, not passion or purpose. Organizational disillusionment afflicts government agencies, nonprofits, schools, and hospitals just as much. Further, it applies not just to the powerless at the bottom of the hierarchy. Behind a facade of success, many top leaders are tired of the power games and infighting; despite their desperately overloaded schedules, they feel a vague sense of emptiness. All of us yearn for better ways to work together — for more soulful workplaces where our talents are nurtured and our deepest aspirations are honored.

As an advisor to startups, I often get asked what to look for in an ideal co-founder or business partner. My first response is that it’s much like finding that ideal spouse, where chemistry, common interests and complementary communication skills are key. After some reflection, I now realize these attributes are necessary but not sufficient to be an ideal business partner.

Eric Kinoti is the proprietor of Shades System East Africa – a company that manufactures and supplies tents, as well as Safi Sana home Cleaning Services/CFM

For me an Entrepreneur, in the purest sense, is the person who identifies a need—any need—and fills it. It’s a primordial urge, independent of product, service, industry or market. Entrepreneurship is about the future and sustainability, an entrepreneur identifies a gap and creates a lasting solution and not just for money but for the future generations benefit and sustainability.

vacation

Entrepreneurs and small business owners are notorious for not taking vacations. Sixty-six percent of small business owners find it difficult to take vacations, according to the June 2015 Office Depot Small Business Index. And that’s a shame, because a relaxing vacation is good for your business. You’ll come back with fresh ideas and a new, positive attitude. What seemed like crushing problems or ever-present worries get put in perspective.

The announcement that the House of Representatives is delaying consideration of H.R. 9 the pending patent reform bill, proves that inventors, small companies, universities, venture capitalists and the life science industry have raised serious concerns in the minds of many Members of Congress that it weakens the patent system, damaging American innovation. However, that does not mean that the fight is over. The formidable forces behind the bill are not going to meekly walk away after spending hundreds of millions of dollars and years of effort hyping the specter of patent trolls to advance their agenda. A vocal segment of the bill’s supporters dismiss the value of patents in today’s economy. To try and hoist a badly shaken patent reform behemoth back onto its feet, they will try to create doubts about the worth of the patent system in the minds of decision makers and the public.
