Have you ever wanted to own a pair of headphones that also covers your nose and mouth for air-filtering purposes? No? Well, Dyson probably thinks many people do want such a device — because why else would it make the Dyson Zone pollution mask? The Zone is a personal face mask/air purifier/noise-canceling headphones combo, and although it may look like an oddity, the company seems convinced it's exactly what the current market needs. In fact, Dyson just announced the product's upcoming release.

Hacker seated in server room launching cyberattack 2022 01 30 02 11 51 utc

A malicious software command that immediately crippled tens of thousands of modems across Europe anchored the cyberattack on a satellite network used by Ukraine’s government and military just as Russia invaded, the satellite owner disclosed Wednesday.

The owner, U.S.-based Viasat, issued a statement providing details for the first time of how the most serious known cyberattack of the Russia-Ukraine war unfolded. The wide-ranging attack affected users from Poland to France, getting quick notice by knocking off remote access to thousands of wind turbines in central Europe.

Despite the flourishing of work from anywhere during the pandemic, it still matters where a startup is located. That's because, as I wrote in Startup Cities, regions of the world differ in the vitality of their local Startup Commons -- a collection of regional resources that at best provide an irresistible attraction for capital and talent or at worst repel both.

Rather than shooting lava into the air, ice volcanoes ooze a 'thicker, slushy icy-water mix or even possibly a solid flow like glaciers', says scientist Kelsi Singer Isacc HERERA, Kelsi SINGER NASA/JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY/APPLIED PHYSICS LABORATORY/SOUTHWEST RESEARCH INSTITUTE/AFP

Strange lumpy terrain on Pluto unlike anything previously observed in the solar system indicates that giant ice volcanoes were active relatively recently on the dwarf planet, scientists said on Tuesday.

The observation, which was made by analyzing images taken by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft, suggests that Pluto's interior was hotter much later than previously thought, according to a new study in the Nature Communications journal.

Joe Biden

President Joe Biden didn’t forget research today, when he submitted to Congress a 2023 budget request that calls for a 9.5% increase in domestic discretionary spending. Biden is asking for a 19% increase at the National Science Foundation (NSF), a 9.6% boost for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), 4.5% more for the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Science, and a 5% hike for NASA’s science missions. Once again, fighting climate change and boosting sustainable energy technologies also rank high among Biden’s research priorities.

Imagine if the world’s horological archives — and their cache of pamphlets, drawings, reports, photographs, letters and other primary sources — were accessible to anyone with an internet connection. To make that possible, the universe of analog ephemera documenting the history of watchmaking would need to be digitized and organized into a Big Data repository, an effort almost too big to contemplate.

Oh canada 2021 08 29 00 58 48 utc

Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland has a difficult balancing act ahead of her as she prepares her spring budget. In light of the co-operation agreement between the Liberals and the NDP, we should expect new measures in the fiscal document to reflect some NDP priorities.

But the government will also need to deliver on its own agenda. At a news conference in January, Freeland said one of her main goals in the budget is to make Canada more innovative.

A Korean research team has developed a soft, mechanically deformable, and stretchable lithium battery which can be used in the development of wearable devices, and examined the battery’s feasibility by printing them on clothing surfaces. The research team, led by Dr. Jeong Gon Son from the Soft Hybrid Materials Research Center at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST; President: Seok-Jin Yoon), announced that they had developed a lithium battery wherein all of the materials, including the anode, cathode, current collector, electrolytes, and encapsulant, are stretchable and printable. The lithium battery developed by the team possesses high capacity and free-form characteristics suitable for mechanical deformation.

BA.2, also called "stealth omicron," is the dominant strain worldwide and responsible for a growing number of COVID-19 cases in the US. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that BA.2 made up 34.9% of COVID-19 cases in the week ending March 19.

In areas where the strain is more prevalent, it's likely contributing to a small increase in cases (New York) and hospitalizations (areas of New England), according to comments by CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky at a White House COVID-19 Response Team Briefing last week.

AI and Robotics Pave the Way for a New Security Technologist Career Pathway Say Industry Experts Newspatrolling com

Media OutReach – 29 March 2022 – With the emerging trend of integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics with manpower to enhance work systems, there will be an inevitable shift in the role of security officers in Singapore, note industry experts. While this digital transformation will free up workers’ time for higher-value tasks and creates more opportunities for them to upskill and move up in the security industry, those who lack the fundamental competencies to operate new technologies may be at a disadvantage.

Oil and gas giant Woodside Petroleum has agreed to help fund the construction of a 5MWe concentrated solar technology demonstration plant in California’s Mojave Desert, and has struck a deal that could see it use the technology for green hydrogen and other uses in Australia and around the world.

The deal – first flagged last year – has been struck with the California-based and Bill Gates-backed Heliogen, which was founded in 2013 with the goal of “replacing fossil fuels with the power of sunlight” and which has developed its own “AI-enabled” concentrated solar technology.

An Amazing 3D Scan of a Hotel Room

Japanese XR enthusiast known as Iwama has demonstrated a cool 3D-scanned model of a hotel room made using an iPhone's LiDAR scanner. For those unaware, the LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) scanner was first introduced with iPhone 12 Pro. The scanner is able to determine the distance between itself and an object by monitoring how long it takes a pulse of infrared light to bounce back. Sending hundreds of thousands of light pulses every second, LiDAR scanners can work out distances and object sizes with relative accuracy over small distances. It is then possible to use the data to construct 3D models.

For venture capital, more money has led to new challenges. With U.S. venture smashing records for funds raised and funds deployed in 2021, the sector has become more competitive on both sides of the table: Entrepreneurs are able to be more selective about who they invite onto their cap tables, and VCs are fielding increased demand from limited partners (LPs) who want access to venture deals at earlier stages.
