Seed capital is the initial funding that allows an ETF to launch and become available to investors. The seed capital is used to fund the creation units that underlie the ETF so the shares can then be offered and traded in the open market. 

Historically, most seed capital is provided by banks and broker-dealers, but many ETFs have been self-seeded as well. Self-seeded ETFs are generally funded with either new capital or with assets from separate accounts and other investment vehicles offered by the firm.

Chief information officers have emerged as key players in their companies’ sustainability programs, leading efforts to unload power-hungry computer-processing applications to the cloud and roll out tech aimed at energy optimization and waste reduction.

Their influence within these programs may grow in 2022, as the relationship between digitization and carbon-based emissions becomes more evident. A 2020 study by the journal Science found that data centers accounted for roughly 1% of global energy use. CIOs see opportunities for innovation.

In 1859, Abraham Lincoln noted that the patent system “… has secured to the inventor, for a limited time, the exclusive use of (an) invention; and thereby added the fuel of interest to the fire of genius….”

President Lincoln knew what he was talking about. He’s the only U.S. president who received a patent, No. 6,469, in 1849.

And while others may have suggested it, Lincoln’s words need to be showcased somewhere (anywhere) at the Lincoln Memorial. Visitors to Lincoln’s Memorial should know that he cared about inventors, as well as preserving the Union.

While silk is best known as a component in clothes and fabric, the material has plentiful uses, spanning biomedicine to environmental science. In Applied Physics Reviews, by AIP Publishing, researchers from Tufts University discuss the properties of silk and recent and future applications of the material.

Silk makes an important biomaterial, because it does not generate an immune response in humans and promotes the growth of cells. It has been used in drug delivery, and because the material is flexible and has favorable technological properties, it is ideal for wearable and implantable health monitoring sensors.

Mobileye

Intel subsidiary Mobileye plans to bring a new supercomputer to market designed to give passenger cars, trucks and SUVs autonomous driving powers.

The company introduced Tuesday at the 2022 CES tech trade show a new system-on-chip called EyeQ Ultra that is purpose-built for autonomous driving. The company said the first silicon for the EyeQ Ultra SoC, which is capable of 176 trillion operations per second (TOPS), is expected at the end of 2023 with full automotive grade production in 2025.
