What are America’s greatest economic assets? Certainly our democratic capitalist system — democracy, rule of law, property rights, the price system — would be at the top of that list. But then what? Lots of candidates, from our vast natural resources to our world-leading university system to our ability to attract the very best of global talent. And, of course, the existence of some assets affects others. Our largest technology companies are the economy’s crown jewels, but they wouldn’t exist if not for some of the above factors, among others (immigration + universities + property rights + California weather).

Can’t stop, won’t stop.

That’s what early data appears to say about the global venture capital market in Q1 2022. New data released by Crunchbase News1 this morning paints the picture of a market slowing, but hardly stopped.

In comparative terms, the dataset shows that the global venture market in Q1 2022 was in fact larger in dollar terms than its year-ago comp. However, compared to the fourth quarter of 2021, it marked a decline – the first in some quarters of record-setting venture totals.

Poor onboarding can leave your employees with lower confidence in their new roles, worsened levels of engagement, and an increased risk of jumping ship when they see a new, more exciting position elsewhere. Microsoft Corp's LinkedIn boosted subscription revenue by 8% after arming its sales team with artificial intelligence software that not only predicts clients at risk of canceling, but also explains how it arrived at its conclusion.

The system, introduced last July and to be described in a LinkedIn blog post on Wednesday, marks a breakthrough in getting AI to "show its work" in a helpful way.

While AI scientists have no problem designing systems that make accurate predictions on all sorts of business outcomes, they are discovering that to make those tools more effective for human operators, the AI may need to explain itself through another algorithm.

Of all the rules and advice available about running your own business, the best pertain to what mistakes to avoid. At the top of the list of mistakes to avoid: as an entrepreneur, you should not do everything yourself.

By default, when an individual chooses to do something, they are choosing not to do something else. Yet despite that simplicity, the inclination to do it all in entrepreneur mode is tempting. We want to know every brick of our businesses and we’re willing to ascribe to the icon of hard work and high rewards. But the reality is that there is too much on the line and you could be doing other things that you are much better at. It’s a powerful choice that separates leaders from the rest of the pack. In his book Good To Great, Jim Collins calls it level V leadership, a level we all aspire to be at.

For years, the well-known security maxim was, “Trust but verify.” However, the statement is no longer sufficient. In today’s borderless, global, mobile, hybrid, cloud-based environment, traditional security approaches cannot defend the digital fortress on its own, and nobody is to be trusted, including employees, customers, and partners. But there is a way out. Zero Trust is an antidote for stale security strategies because it demands that organizations entirely remove trust from the equation by denying access to everyone.

BullFrog AI Holdings, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company focused on applying its proprietary Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning platform to improve drug development and shorten clinical trial timelines, today announced that it has entered into an exclusive license agreement with Johns Hopkins University for use of its novel formulation of mebendazole in treating cancer.

Under the terms of the agreement, BullFrog AI was granted an exclusive worldwide license to manufacture and use a novel formulation of mebendazole developed at the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) School of Medicine for treatment of cancer. In addition, it has been evaluated in a Phase I clinical trial in patients with high-grade gliomas (NCT01729260). The trial, an open-label dose-escalation study, enrolled 24 patients and demonstrated long-term safety and acceptable toxicity of mebendazole with adjuvant temozolomide in this population.

People in room with a leader... one asking question

In the early days of the pandemic, colleges scrambled to move their work forces online in order to keep their operations running. The initial results weren’t always pretty. But higher ed has spent the past two years learning from its mistakes and making improvements, even while more of its employees have begun returning to campus. Despite hopeful signs that the worst of the pandemic is behind us, there is a growing understanding that remote and hybrid work, at least in some form, is here to stay. With the benefit of hindsight and enough time to consider things more thoughtfully, institutional leaders and academic administrators are increasingly engaging with essential questions about remote work: What is the best way to manage teams at a distance? What does it take to recruit, retain, and engage faculty and staff members? What can higher education learn from other industries that have long embraced telecommuting?

Bauby, who had signed a book contract shortly before his accident, wrote the memoir “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” using a dictation system in which his speech therapist recited the alphabet and he would blink when she said the correct letter. They wrote the 130-page book one blink at a time.
